Natasha, Pierre and the Great Comet of 1812 is a musical adaptation of Leo Tolstoy's War and Peace, described as an electropop opera. It is based on Book 8 of War and Peace, focusing on Natasha's affair with Anatole.[1]
The opera premiered in 2012 at Ars Nova, and revived in 2013 at a custom pop-up tent Kazino NYC . The tent was initially located in the Meatpacking District, and moved to the Theater District at the end of September. The 2013 production, directed by Rachel Chavkin, combined elements of interactive theatre and dinner theater.
Malloy's original score merges Russian folk and classical music with indie rock and EDM influences. In 2013 Ghostlight Records will release a two-disc cast album.[2]
The opera received the 2013 Richard Rodgers Award for Musical Theater. [3]
