The 2006 Toronto municipal election will take place on 13 November 2006, to elect a mayor and 44 city councillors. The race will be held in conjunction with those held in other municipalities in Ontario. See Ontario municipal elections, 2006.

CFTO has confirmed that on their newscast on November 29, 2005 that current city councillor Jane Pitfield will run against current Mayor of Toronto, David Miller. The Toronto Sun reported on November 7 that Pitfield was thinking about running for the mayor's office.[1]

On Wednesday, April 12, 2006, AM 640 Toronto Radio reported that Dennis Mills was interested in seeking the Mayor's office in the 2006 election. Reports suggest that he is setting up funds to throw his name into the race.

The Toronto Star has reported that former Toronto police chief Julian Fantino, currently serving as Commissioner of Emergency Management for Ontario, and current federal MP Ken Dryden [2] may run against Miller. However, Dryden has since joined the race to become leader of the Liberal Party of Canada at their 2006 leadership convention. On April 15th, the Toronto Star reported that Julian Fantino [3] looks like he will not run for the office of the mayor. As well, current Toronto city councillor Rob Ford is rumoured to be in the hunt for the mayor's office in 2006. Councillors George Mammoliti and Michael Thompson were also rumoured to be in the hunt, but have since filed their papers to seek re-election in their wards.

Local activist Dave Mezlin created an initiative and contest called City Idol, to encourage local citizens otherwise alienated from politics to seek elected office in the upcoming municipal election.
