The Portland AFL team is an unnamed professional arena football team based in Portland, Oregon. The team is to begin play for the 2014 season as a member of the Arena Football League (AFL). The team will play as a member of the National Conference in the league's Pacific Division. The team is owned by Terry Emmert, and will play their home games at the Moda Center.

History

Portland's prior AFL history

The unnamed team will be the 2nd arena football team to call Portland home. From 1997 to 1999 the Portland Forest Dragons played in the AFL before relocating to Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.[1]

Expansion

On October 2, 2013, the AFL hosted a press conference at the Moda Center announcing that Emmert had purchased the membership rights to an AFL franchise.[2] Emmert's purchase of the Milwaukee Mustangs, was only a purchase of the league's membership rights, and the Portland franchise will not retain any of the Mustangs' history.[1] On October 8, 2013, Portland named Matthew Sauk as the team's first ever head coach.[3] Sauk came over from the Utah Blaze, where he served as the assistant head coach and offensive coordinator.[3] On November 8, 2013 the franchise announced that the nicknames, "Thunder", "Enforcers", "Sasquatch", "Growlers" and "Stomp" were the finalist for the team.[4]
