Norma Jean is a Christian metalcore band from Douglasville, Georgia, USA, a suburb of Atlanta. Norma Jean was nominated for Best Recording Package, at the Grammy Awards of 2006. [1]
General Information
Originally known as Luti-Kriss, they released their first album in 1999, the "Travail+Luti-Kriss" split CD on Pluto Records, which was then re-released as an EP titled 5ep through Pluto Records in 2000. The band was then signed to Tooth and Nail/Solid State Records and put out a full-length release, Throwing Myself, in 2001. After the release of Throwing Myself, the band changed their name to Norma Jean to avoid confusion with rapper Ludacris, who is also from the Atlanta area. In 2002, the band released Bless the Martyr and Kiss the Child on Solid State Records[2]. They released their second album in March of 2005, titled O God, the Aftermath [3]. Their original vocalist, Josh Scogin, left the band just before the release of Bless the Martyr and Kiss the Child, stating that it "was just something that I felt led to do." [4] He went on to start the Christian hardcore/metalcore band The Chariot, signed by Solid State Records as well, with Keller Harbin and Joshua Beiser, and was replaced by Cory Brandan Putman (formerly of the bands Eso-Charis and Living Sacrifice). They are in the process of recording another album, Redeemer, with legendary producer Ross Robinson [5]. It is expected to be released August of 2006. The band's output as Luti-Kriss was often compared to bands like Deftones, Training For Utopia and Will Haven, but as Norma Jean their music is more similar to metalcore bands such as Coalesce, Converge, The Dillinger Escape Plan and Botch.
Trivia
- The band is known to have a somewhat strange sense of humor, and a fascination with barbecue. The members of the band have had "BBQ" with an arrow pointing upwards tattoed on their lip [6]. At one point, Solid State Records also held a contest in which participants could win a year's supply of Norma Jean's own barbecue sauce [7].
- The full title of "O' God, The Aftermath" is "O' God, The Aftermath (The Marvelous End of the Exhausted Contender)"
