Bebi in his second form

Bebi (FUNimation's dub: Baby) is a fictional character in the anime Dragon Ball GT. Bebi was created by the Tsufurujins, when the Saiyans took over Planet Plant, to one day get revenge upon their destroyers. Because he did not appear the original manga by Akira Toriyama (consists of the story lines of Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z), he is not considered canonical by many fans.

History

Bebi describes himself as "a last resort by the fine scientists of the Tuffles (Tsufurujin)", a genetically superior parasitic organism combined with the DNA of the Tsufurujin king. Bebi has the ability to liquify himself, and enter a creature's body through cuts, orifices, or any other openings in the body, and then possess them, at the same time adding his own energy to the creature's power (while subsequently adding theirs to his). When he left the victim's body, he would leave behind an egg in the victim, making the victim forever his. Bebi makes his victim do things the way he wants it, with the possessed one unable to resist or protest. An example of this is shown on the Planet Tsufuru (New Vegeta in the English versions), where he commanded Son Gohan and Videl to kill their own daughter Pan. Pan was saved, thanks to Uub, but her parents were determined to make her one of Bebi's servants.

Bebi was incubated by the Machine Mutant scientist, Dr. Myuu (dialogue in the Japanese version of Dragonball GT hints that Myuu may have been designed with the sole purpose of bringing Bebi to life). However, he was freed prematurely when Goku, Pan, and Trunks found the secret biosphere where Myuu was keeping him. The trio appeared to destroy Bebi, knowing the threat he might pose, but Bebi escaped by liquifying himself and entering Dr. Myuu's body, who he then decapitated from the inside.

Bebi began orchestrating a chain of events behind-the-scenes in order to lure the Saiyans into a trap, in order to possess them and take their Saiyan power. After possessing a comatose child inside a shipwreck (and using Myuu's Dragonball to lure the trio to the wreck), Bebi waited as they brought him to a hospital planet. He proceeded to leave his child host, and enter the body of a doctor, who then offered to show Trunks the hospital's technology. During this tour, Bebi attempted to possess Trunks, only to discover that he, Goku, and Pan were aware of his plan, subsequently being the first moment to introduce Bebi's psychological weakness (see below), in that he would get over-excited when he was about to possess someone, and would unintentionally unmask his ki.

However, Bebi did succeed in possessing Trunks, only to find that he couldn't stay in Trunks' body, as his undeveloped state couldn't contain a powerful person for long. Bebi escaped, and went into hiding, possessing and draining countless people of their power as he made his way to Earth.

Upon his arrival on Earth, he began possessing random people until he found Goten, who he made his first victim. He fought Goten without a body to test his Saiyan power. During the fight, Bebi seemed to toy with Goten, meaning he may have been stronger. One example of this is the fact that when Goten attacked full force with energy blasts Bebi simply reappeared, unaffected by Goten's attack. He allowed Goten to shoot him head-on with a Kamehameha wave, then slid off the beam with ease and possessed Goten.

Next, he went after Gohan, picking a fight with him during a family get-together. After the two went outside to settle things, Gohan stated that he knew Goten was not as he appeared. The two fought, and when Gohan was forced to power up, Bebi seized the opportunity to enter his body, after leaving an egg inside Goten.

Finally, Bebi moved on to his ultimate objective; Vegeta. Using Goten and Gohan to ambush and double-team Vegeta during a drive with his daughter, Bra. Vegeta fought the two amongst a field of windmills next to a dam (after Bra fled, and Bebi declared his origin to Vegeta). Eventually, Bebi possessed Vegeta, but not before telling him about the eggs.

When Goku, Trunks, and Pan returned to Earth with the Black Star Dragonballs, everyone on earth had been taken over, except for Mr. Buu, who expelled the egg Bebi put in him, Mr. Satan, who hid inside Buu, and Uub. When they returned home, they were assaulted by their controlled parents (with Trunks facing off against Vegeta-Bebi himself). During this, Bebi reveals to Trunks that his failed possession of him was all an act in order to lay an egg within Trunks; actually possessing Trunks was not his goal. At the same time, Goku fought off the possessed Gohan and Goten (with Pan unable to bring herself to fight them). Bebi soon arrived on the scene with Vegeta's egg-controlled family. Goku fought with Vegeta-Bebi (resulting in Bebi morphing Vegeta's body into a human version of himself, having the Saiyans funnel all their power into him, and creating his ultimate attack), but was utterly defeated, and appeared to be killed by Bebi's ultimate attack; the Revenge Death Ball. However, during this fight, Goku learned of Bebi's weakness...

After Dende had given him the newly recovered Black Star Dragon Balls, Bebi used them to recreate the Tsufurujin home planet, dubbing it "Planet Tsufuru", and organizing a selective migration of a limited amount of people to begin populating the planet. He had established his palace as the giant tower in the center of the main city on Planet Tsufuru. During his stay here, Uub challenged him to avenge Goku, but didn't stand a chance. Once Uub merged with Mr. Buu, and became Ubuu, he appeared to be equal in power to Bebi-Vegeta. However, Bebi declared he was tired of playing, and managed to blast Ubuu's own Henka Beam back at him, turning him into chocolate. Bebi then ate Ubuu.

The final battle was against Goku, who had regained his tail. At first, Goku was still no match. However, once he reached Super Saiyan 4, the tables were turned, and Goku was able to handle Bebi easily. However, Bulma, using her Bruit Ray device, caused Vegeta's body to turn into the Golden Oozaru, making him more powerful than Goku in his Super Saiyan 4 state. Goku is severely beaten and wounded. Just when Bebi was about to destroy everyone with a "Super Galick Gun", Ubuu began to attack Bebi from the inside, weakening him. This gave Trunks, Gohan, Goten and Pan enough time to restore Goku's power by giving their energy to him. At full power Super Saiyan 4, Goku fought and even battled with Bebi, until Goku eventually proved to be stronger. Goku blasted oozaru Bebi's tail off, forcing him to leave Vegeta's body.

In the end Bebi was shot into the sun with a Kamehameha by Goku in Super Saiyan 4 form, while trying to escape in a space pod, once he was beaten. His servants were brought back to normal, thanks to the Holy Water.

While Bebi had tremendous power, and intelligence, he possessed a great deal of anger and rage that was easy to invoke, as well as sadism (he refused to let Goku die until he was happy with how much he had beaten him). He let the comments of his opponents get to him, which Goku knew and exploited during each of their fights (incurring Bebi's wrath when he would claim to be stronger, even when he wasn't, and would laugh at Bebi over the fact that he wasn't knocked out yet). In the final battle, Goku had to use Bebi's psychological weakness, the power from all the other saiyans, and an attack on Bebi's innards by Ubuu, to defeat Bebi.

Powers

Bebi can liquify himself in order to enter his victim's bodies. As he grows, his liquidation ability becomes more advanced. In his infancy stage, he can only become a thick, silvery goop, which is slow moving. In his teenage state, he can become a liquid, and is even able to pass, unharmed, through energy beams in this state. Fully grown, he can become completely watery, and can even take other shapes (he appears as a ball for a brief period).

Bebi is unable to use his full power without the aid of a host, so he must have a host body to display his full potential. It appears that when he has chosen a permanent host, he begins to alter the host's appearance to mirror his own (as is seen in the final form of Vegeta-Bebi).

As he gains more power through possession, Bebi appears to "grow up". When he first appears, he's a skinless, mechanical infant. When he appears before Goten, he's a blue-skinned teenager, with facial markings and his standard outfit. When he escapes Vegeta's body, he's fully grown into adulthood.

After possessing a host, Bebi adds their power to his own. He can either choose to leave an egg in the victim after leaving them, or suck them dry completely. He also gains the ability to make nameless copycat attacks of those who he has possessed. He also used a 'Super Galick Gun', which was, essentially, an overpowered version of Vegeta's Galick Gun. He can also emit a bright light from his eyes, similar to Tienshinhan's Taiyoken (Solar Flare), except that it lasts longer than a single flash.

During the fight with Vegeta, Bebi (in Gohan's body) and the egg-controlled Goten trapped Vegeta in a ball created by the two flying around him at high speeds. While in this ball, he seemed able to create ghost-like images of Gohan and Goten, both speaking with his voice.

Bebi's ultimate attack, the Revenge Death Ball, is a dark, evil version of the Spirit Bomb, containing the forcibly obtained, hate-filled spiritual energy of everyone on earth he's overtaken. The resulting explosion generated by the attack is even able to cause quakes across dimensions. He also seems to have the energy stored in him at all times, as all his other times he's used the attack, he's used the stored energy (and even amplified it).

Bebi, as the Golden Oozaru in Vegeta's body, was one of the most powerful characters in the Dragonball trilogy. During the final battle, he had far outpowered Goku at Super Saiyan 4, and had to be fought with psychological tactics, rather than brute force. At a fraction of his power (because he was in too much of a blind, bloodlust-fueled rage to properly control his power) his Super Galick Gun, uncharged, was able to do enough damage to the surface of the Earth to be visible from Planet Tsufuru, and, as Rou Dai Kaioshin (Old Kai in the English dub) feared, could destroy the planet if any charged attack from him hit the ground. Even his screams could do considerable damage.

Special Attacks

  • Revenge Death Ball - A large black energy ball. An attack that would have killed Goku if Kibitoshin (Kibito Kai in the English dub), hadn't rescued Goku at the last minute. This attack is similar to the Genki Dama (Spirit Bomb) attack, because Bebi has to draw energy from his slaves (the humans). However, this accumulation of power is only needed once, with the power being (evidentally) stored within Bebi, as he is able to generate it at will every time afterward. This attack was also used as a Golden Oozaru.
  • Fire Death Ball - A giant black ball of energy, with an orange outer glow. Releases a firey explosion when it hits. He hurled this attack at the Super Saiyan 4 Goku while in the Golden Oozaru state. Known as Flaming Death Ball in the Funimation dub.
  • Super Galick Gun - A powered up Galick Gun. Performed while in the Golden Oozaru state.
  • Renzoku Super Galick Gun - Firing many energy bullets. An attempt to destroy the now fullpower Super Saiyan 4 Goku. Performed while in the Golden Oozaru state.
  • Fire Breath - As a Golden Oozaru, Bebi had the ability to launch streams of intense flames from his mouth capable of engulfing much of his city in a blazing inferno.
  • x10 Revenge Death Ball - A stronger variation of the Revenge Death Ball. This attack is much bigger, stronger, and is signified by a sparkling nucleus. This made full contact with Goku, but due to Bebi's then-weakened and maddened state, it was to no avail. Used by Bebi when he was in his Golden Oozaru state.
  • Final Flash - A technique Bebi uses while he is in control of Vegeta. Bebi's version of Final Flash is Pink. Bebi uses this attack once against Goku during their fight on earth (only in the dub. See below), and again later against Uub. Uub was defeated by this technique but later returned to fight Bebi again after fusing with Fat Buu.
  • Big Bang Attack - Used by Bebi while occupying Vegeta's body. In the Japanese version, he performed the Final Flash stance, but shouted "Big Bang Attack", and fired the attack. In the dub, this was changed to Bebi calling out the Final Flash, possibly to avoid confusion.
  • Kamaehamaeha - The famous beam attack, used against Piccolo while inhabiting Gohan's body. Bebi appeared to defeat Piccolo in one hit with the attack.
  • Liquify - Similar to Majin Buu's attack, Bebi can liquify his body, and as such enter the bodies of others. This was used as Bebi's means of entering, and subsequently possesing, his victims. As Bebi advanced in his stages of "aging", so, too, did this ability advance. Originally, he could become a thick goop, capable of overtaking his victims, or killing them from the inside (as was the case with Dr. Myuu). As he grew, he could liquify completely, to the point where he could pass unharmed through beam attacks weaker than he was, and reshape his host body to resemble a humanoid version of himself. He was also able to emerge from his victims from anywhere on their bodies. It should be noted that, unlike Majin Buu, Bebi's possesion could not be resisted.
  • Eye Light - When not inhabiting a host body, Bebi possesed the ability to emit a bright light from his eyes that rivaled the Taiyoken. This move, however, could last as long as Bebi chose to emit it.

Trivia

  • Bebi was one of the few new characters of Dragonball GT to be designed by Akira Toriyama
  • Bebi's aura/energy color is pink.
  • In Japan, the Golden Oozaru version of Bebi-Vegeta was referred to as Super Bebi. In the American version, there is no special name for Bebi-Vegeta as an Oozaru.
  • Bebi-Vegeta, as the Golden Oozaru, was the final boss in the PlayStation game, Dragon Ball GT: Final Bout. The final form of Bebi-Vegeta is also an unlockable character in Dragon Ball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi for the PlayStation 2.
  • Super Bebi is the only character to actually match the Dragonball/Z/GT stereotype of everyone being so strong that "anything they do will just destroy the planet".
  • For reasons unknown, Super Bebi's strength was significantly dropped in FUNimation's dub, according to various character dialogue. This includes, but is not limited to, Rou Daikaioshin stating that Bebi was stronger in the Japanese version, while in the English dub, Old Kai states that the two are at equal power. Another example would be the complete removal of Bebi's "You're nothing compared to [my power]" line entirely in the dub.
  • Bebi was originally going to be the chief antagonist in Dragon Ball GT, which was to end at episode 40. However, the series was forced to continue so that it could coincide with the release of Dragon Ball GT: Final Bout. Thus, the series went on. It also caused the series to break with the franchise's tradition of successively stronger villains, with Super 17 lasting only two episodes before his death, and the Dark Dragons being killed during their one and only battles.
  • Bebi, while in Vegeta's body, has one of the most impressive fighting records of any Dragon Ball villain; he was only defeated twice (including his ultimate defeat), with every other battle seeing him totally dominate his opponents (often "playing" with them).
  • Bebi is one of the few characters to act on the long powerups of others, using this as his opportunity to possess them (since they're too busy powering up to stop him).
  • His Japanese theme music contains a series of staccato screeching notes, similar to the theme from the movie Psycho.
  • When Bebi possesses Vegeta, the name of this form varies slightly in different regions; in Japan, Vegeta's name comes first (Vegeta-Bebi). In the American version, Bebi's name comes first (Bebi-Vegeta).
  • While other characters have held back their powers in past battles, Bebi is the only villain to actually pretend to be losing, for fun.
  • Bebi is around longer than any other villian in Dragonball GT.
