Menon is commonly thought of as a surname common amongst the people in the state of Kerala, India. In fact, it is title or caste-name equivalent to Pillai and belongs to the Nair caste. Other Nair names with the same status include Nambiar, Kurup, Kaimal and Nayanar. The name Menon derived from Menavan which means scribe in the Dravidian languages(A Tulu equivalent caste has a similar surname, Menava). Menons served as Prime and cabinet ministers of the royal court,Commanders of royal armies, Administrative officers of the royal court under Kerala rulers and later emerged as literary and cultural figures in Kerala.
