Napier, New Zealand
Appearance
(There is also an article about John Napier.)
Napier is a coastal port city in Hawke's Bay, New Zealand. The city was established in the 1850s and soon became the centre of the Hawkes Bay region, serving as the provincial capital in the provinces were abolished in the 1870s.
In 1931 Napier was levelled by the Napier earthquake and ensuing fires. The city was rebuilt in the Art Deco style that was popular at the time, and remains a fine example of this type of architecture.
Thanks to the pleasant climate Napier is something of a resort town, with many nice restaurants and cafes.
