Utah Valley University
File:UVlogo.jpg, or UVSC, is a publicly-funded college located in Orem, Utah. Although the College has many courses of study, including an increasing number of bachelor's degree programs, it still retains many of its trade/technical school roots. The College currently offers 49 bachelor degrees (and growing) and more than 270 career-preparation programs. The College’s Wasatch Campus in Heber City, Utah, also offers bachelor degrees in business management and secondary education as well as associate degrees in accounting, behavioral science, business management, elementary education and general education.
UVSC is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Northwest Association of Schools and Colleges. Accreditation was initially granted in 1969, renewed 1984, 1995, and 2005. Vocational accreditation was also granted UVSC in 1976 and renewed in 1990 and 1995 by the Utah State Office of Vocational Education.
Enrollment: UVSC was the college of choice for more than 24,500 students in 2005, representing all 50 states and 78 countries around the world.
Interesting Facts: 8th fastest growing school in the country. Was the setting for the documentary movie "This Divided State" [1], which deals with Michael Moore's visit to the college during his "Slacker Uprising Tour" at the time of the 2004 elections (see Michael Moore article for background information). UVSC is Orem’s largest employer and the third largest employer in Utah County with more than 1,300 faculty and 3,540 part- and full-time staff. According to the December 2005 Utah Foundation Research Report, UVSC (which only 12 years ago was a community college) is producing the highest-paid bachelor’s degree graduates in Utah. UVSC is the state’s third largest academic institution, and is currently in the process of transitioning from college to university status. The College’s location provides year-round recreation, within 20 miles students enjoy winter sports, hiking, mountain biking, water recreation and more. UVSC is recognized as one of the safest colleges in the country and is home to the largest LDS Institute program in the world.
The school mascot is the Wolverine. The athletic program recently moved directly from the NJCAA to NCAA Division I status. Most teams compete as independents, and the school is currently attempting to gain a conference affiliation. The most likely candidate appears to be the Mid-Continent Conference, which includes fellow Utah school Southern Utah University.
The student produced newspaper is The College Times.
