Adıyaman is a province in south-central Turkey. The province was created in 1954 out of part of Malatya Province. It covers an area of 7,614 km² and has a population of 623,811 (2000 census). Its capital is Adıyaman.

Nemrud Dağı is a major site of interest in the province, noted for its sanctuary of statues built by Antiochus Theos, king of Commagene.

Politics

Adıyaman Province has traditionally been kind to the mainstay of the religious wing of Turkey's politics, Mr. Necmettin Erbakan. It was one of the first Turkish provinces where his movement (then, the National Salvation Party) had scored a handsome 15 % in 1973 a few years after its modest beginning, and his score went on to gradually increase ever since. Marked by the military coup in the 1980's, Erbakan's party (then, the Welfare Party) came at first place for the province with 29.24 % and 23.53 % in 1994 and 1999 respectively. Even with his breakaway pupil, the current Turkish PM Recep Tayyip Erdoğan's AKP marking the 2004 local elections with 41.11 %, a faithful following of 15 % (a rarity among Turkey's provinces) of the electorate had still voted for his, then Virtue Party, thus coming second after AKP. Between the traditional opposite rivals for Turkey's eastern provinces, the rightist MHP, campaigning on Turkish-identity consciousness arguments, had scored by 9.62 % to 5.97 % over HADEP, predecessor of actual DEHAP and campaigning on Kurdish-identity consciousness arguments, in 1999, and the tide was more on DEHAP's side for the 2004 Provincial General Assembly elections, which at that time obtained 6.54 % under SHP's cover, while the score remained at 4.34 % for MHP.
