While the SMLE was regarded as an excellent rifle, it was found to be time consuming and expensive to produce on a large scale. In 1939, the British military adopted the No. 4 Mk1 rifle as the solution. Asides from simplification for manufacture, there was little difference between the two rifles, the largest probably being that the No. 4 was half a kilogram heavier.

One of the main variants of this rifle was the No. 4 Mk1 (T), a sniper rifle fitted with a cheek rest on the butt and usually the No. 32 Mk3 scope.

This rifle has a length of 1.13 m, weighs 4.1 kg, magazine capacity of 10 rounds and a muzzle velocity of 745 m/s. It usually mounted the No. 4 Mk2 spiked bayonet.
