Medal of Honor: Allied Assault (MOHAA) is a first-person shooter (FPS) computer game developed by 2015, Inc. The game, based on the modified Quake III engine from Heavy Metal: F.A.K.K.², simulates infantry combat in the European and North African Theaters during World War II. Allied Assault is the first game in the Medal of Honor computer and video game series to be released for Windows, and the only one to be ported to Linux.
In the game the player takes on the role of Lt. Mike Powell of the U.S. Army Rangers who works for the OSS. Single player missions include assaulting German bases in Algiers and Norway, storming Omaha Beach on D-Day, and rescuing comrades behind enemy lines in occupied France. The original game's Omaha Beach mission is often compared to Steven Spielberg's 1998 film Saving Private Ryan. This level was re-created in Medal of Honor: Frontline for consoles. Other elements in the game are also comparable to the film, like the sniper town level.
The game has been re-released as the Medal of Honor: Allied Assault Deluxe Edition which includes the Medal of Honor: Spearhead expansion pack, two strategy guides, music from Allied Assault, and a preview of Medal of Honor: Pacific Assault, and the Medal of Honor Allied Assault War Chest which includes the game and both expansions with a bonus disc.
Overview
The game pits the player as Lt. Mike Powell, an agent for the Office of Strategic Services (OSS). Lt. Powell is sent through six missions in the North African and European theatre and is expected to complete multiple objectives on every mission. Col. Hargrove, Powell's mission commander, sends dossiers and important information on how to complete your mission every so often. Along the way Powell will frequently be helped by Allied forces, however most of the time he is on his own against the Germans.
- Level 1 takes place in Algiers, where Powell helps secure the beaches for Operation Torch as well as rescue SAS commando Major Grillo.
- In level 2, Powell goes to Norway to scuttle the U529, and destroy the NAXOS prototype, a device that would shift the balance of power in the Atlantic back to the Nazis. It should also be noted that Major Grillo meets his untimely end here, after letting Powell into the complex.
- In level 3, Powell must survive Omaha Beach, and then goes with Captain Ramses to find US Paratroopers and assist in taking out a battery of nebelwerfers.
- In level 4, Powell goes behind enemy lines to gather intelligence on German infantry movements.
- In level 5, Powell has to protect a team of Allied tank operators and steal a King Tiger, in order to seize a bridge to quicken the seige of the town of Brest.
- In the 6th and final mission, Powell must go to Fort Schmerzen and destroy it. Schmerzen (pain in German) is a mustard gas facility that Lt. James Patterson ironically gassed in Medal of Honor (PS).
Multiplayer
Medal of Honor Allied Assault can be played in a multiplayer mode. Game servers run so players can connect and play games against other players form around the world. The server can run mods, and/or custom maps. Most servers are run by clans. Clans are groups of players who interact and play with and against other clans in competition, or in plain old fun. Clans have names and choose players based on skill or other factors. There is a problem with frequent cheating in the multiplayer mode unfortunately.Wallhacks are the most common cheat used in the game. The wallhack allows a player to see through walls and get the unfair advantage. This can make it unfair and unfun for other cheat-free players. There are some server-side anti cheat programs that can be employed, but not all work well. Server administrators usualy, but not always, patrol the game and look for cheaters to ban from their server.
Expansion packs
Spearhead is the first expansion pack for Allied Assault. It was developed by EA Los Angeles. Spearhead re-enacts 3 major European Theater battles through the eyes of Sgt. Jack Barnes (who is voiced by Gary Oldman). As Barnes, a paratrooper of the 501 P.I.R., 101st Airborne, players land behind the Atlantic Wall in D-Day in Normandy, hold the line in the Ardennes in the Battle of the Bulge, and infiltrate Berlin before the Red Army begins their attack. The initial missions are often compared to the 2001 HBO miniseries Band of Brothers.
Breakthrough is the second expansion pack for Medal of Honor: Allied Assault this time developed by TKO Software where the player takes the role of Sgt. John Baker of the 2nd Army Corps. This campaign covers Kasserine Pass, the turning point of the North African campaign, the fall of the town of Bizerte, the Allied invasion of Sicily in 1943, the epic race to Messina, Italy between George Patton's 7th Army and Montgomery's 8th, followed by the amphibious landings and defense of the beachhead at Anzio, Italy.
Trivia
In Allied Assault, the second part of Fort Schmerzen is an exact replica of the same level in the first Medal of Honor.
In Breakthrough, the German forces at Monte Cassino and Monte Battaglia are shown to be infantry. Both the defense of Monte Cassino and the attack on Monte Battaglia was made by German paratroopers, the Fallschirmjäger.
In Spearhead, the player drops with the 101st Airborne, yet you regroup with British paratroopers. The British 6th Airborne landed miles away, near Caen. It should also be noted that the setting of the first mission is infact in the Netherlands and not France.
Jack Barnes also appeared in Frontline. However, in Frontline he is a Corporal in the 82nd Airborne specializing in explosives, with a Southern drawl. In Spearhead, he is a Sergeant in the 101st Airborne, with a plainer North Dakota accent.
