Canada's Next Top Model (also abbreviated as CNTM) is a Canadian reality show in which ten women compete against each other to win a variety of prizes. The winner will walk away with a modeling contract from Sutherland Models, a $100 000 beauty contract from Procter & Gamble (maker of CoverGirl), and an editorial spread in Fashion Magazine. CNTM is hosted by Canadian supermodel and actor Tricia Helfer. The show airs every Wednesday at 8/7c on Citytv. A rerun is also broadcasted every Tuesday at 8/7c on A Channel.

Premise

CNTM, based upon the successful television show America's Next Top Model created and co-produced by supermodel Tyra Banks, is quite similar in its format and style to that of its American counterpart. In any given episode, there are three events that occur. They are listed below in the sequential order they appear.

The challenge

A challenge will usually focus on an element important to modeling. For example, in the first episode the girls were asked to show Jay Manuel their runway walks. A special judge, unique to the episode, will evaluate the contestants and decide the winner, who will receive a prize for their victory. The winner is then permitted to allow a certain number of other contestants to receive a similar, but lessened, reward, while the others are given nothing. For example, Heather, who won the challenge of Episode 1, was given first choice of the rooms in their house. Heather then chose Andrea to share in the prize with her.

The photoshoot

After the challenge is over with, contestants pose for the camera in a photoshoot. Photoshoots for CNTM will be conceptualized by Sima Kumar, the creative directer of the show. In a photoshoot, each model will receive a certain number of frames. Success in the competition largely relies on good photographs.

The judging and elimination

At the end of each CNTM episode, the girls are critiqued and assessed by a panel of judges consisting of Tricia Helfer, Jeanne Beker, Paul Venoit, and Stacey McKenzie. Based upon performance in the challenge, the photoshoot, as well as on the general attitude and display of the contestant, the judges deliberate and decide upon a girl to leave the competition. The last two girls, at an elimination, left are said to be in the "bottom two".

Episode 1: Hit the Dance Floor Running

The girls traveled in SUVs to the start line of the competition, where they were greeted by Jay Manuel, director of the photoshoots for America's Next Top Model. Jay instructed the contestants to remove their makeup so that Polaroid shots could be taken. After the shots were completed, the girls went to the Brentwood Bay Lodge and Spa, and were issued their first challenge.

They were to choose an outfit from a rack of Miss Sixty clothing, valued at $50 000, that they believed represented what a model should look like. After selecting their apparel the models walked a winding, wooden, makeshift catwalk, as Jay evaluated their performance. He broke it to the girls that none of their walks were particularly good, but chose Heather Dorssers as the winner. Heather decided to share her prize, first choice of rooms in their house, with Andrea.

Once all the rooms were chosen, Tricia herself made a grand appearance, emerging from a water plane, and inviting the finalists to dinner with her at the Fairmont Empress, a classy and sophisticated hotel and restaurant. The girls prepared for their night on the town. When they arrived, Sylvie Majcher felt out of place, as she was wearing jeans and a snowboarding jacket from earlier in the day, while the other girls were dressed more appropiately.

During dessert, Helfer introduced her new protégés to her model scout friend, Kelly Strait. Kelly decided that the girl he believed had the most potential was Heather. After this was let into the open, an awkward silence ensued, the other contestants obviously jealous.

In their first photoshoot the girls were to model as "iconic" women of rock. Jay introduced the girls to CNTM's creative director, Sima Kumar. Kumar proceeded to introduce them to Brandon Hall, of Sutherland Models, who took the girls measurements and declared Tenika's body as the best of the bunch. In the shoot, Sylvie, portraying Deborah Harry, and Brandi, embodying Sade, did arguably the best jobs, while Dawn Buggins, who froze in front of the camera, did the worst.

At the judging, Tenika was scolded by Helfer for walking about topless on the set. The judges agreed that Sylvie's photograph was of high quality, but disliked her choice of dress and her attitude. They also agreed that Ylenia had the most difficult outfit to pose in, and did a good job, though Jay worried that she would not have enough range in facial expressions. Ultimately, Sylvie was eliminated for her negative attitude.

Episode 2: Float Like a Butterfly, Fight Like a Babe

The day following the elimination, the contestants went to receive their makeovers, and were greeted by Tricia, who introduced them to Greg Wencel, a top Canadian hairdresser who was also Helfer's personal stylist. The models were told to go downstairs to begin. Brandi was the first to arrive; she was immediately confused as to why there wasn't a place for her. Helfer quickly explained that she would be dealt with later. It was later explained that they were already pleased with her hair, though they believed it needed better styling; they ended up straightening it.

Tenika's hair was given extensions and colored a "warm chocolate brown". Heather, whose hair was given a "drastic" cut, was described as a "pain in the rear" by Wencel and "pissy" by Paul Venoit. Sisi's hair was made to look more "glossy" and "shiney". Alanna's hair was dyed "chestnut red" and cut shorter. Natalie's hair was lengthened and lightened. Dawn's hair was described as being reminiscent of "high school", and was darkened. A couple of inches were taken off of Ylenia's hair. Andrea was supposed to receive extensions like Tenika, colored a dark brown, however her hair was apparently so fried and damaged that it wouldn't be possible. She was initially quite upset, calling her mother for support. After some more styling and coloring, she accepted and embraced her new look, shorter and red. Venoit described Andrea's personal style as "off the money".

Sisi felt hurt and ignored, as if more attention was being focused on the girls "prettier" than her. Brandi was "happy" with her haircut. After receiving her makeover, Ylenia believed that the other girls would feel threatened by her. Tenika never thought she could look she could look so beautiful. Sisi commented on the budding friendship of Tenika and Andrea, making the observation that they were only "great friends" because neither of them thought they were direct competition for each other.

Once back at the house, both Dawn and Brandi called their boyfriends. After isolating and separating herself from the other girls, Brandi broke down into tears, saying that she "doesn't want [them] to think they can't talk to [her]". Tenika commented about Brandi, comparing her and her behaviour to that of a snake.

At the week's photoshoot Helfer was present, welcoming them to "the fight club". The photoshoot was set in a boxing ring and featured bikinis. Helfer was present during each model's session to help and guide them with posing. Sima Kumar compared Tenika's performance in the first and second shoots, stating that she had gone from "lost" and "flailing" to "bestial" and "animalistic". The photographer believed that Dawn hadn't learned to "trust herself". Natalie didn't feel comfortable in the bathing suit and was told, during her shoot, to suck in her stomach. The photographer said that Brandi needed to relax, that Ylenia has "something in her eyes", and that Sisi is a "freak" in a good way.

When the models returned to their house, a DVD was played comparing the runway walks of the previous week to that of professional models. Most of the models were embarrassed and ashamed to watch the footage. Tenika called herself a jackass. Natalie said that she wouldn't be surprised if she were eliminated because she was "too big". Sisi mocks Dawn profusely, calling her "so f*cking boring", and Brandi "[knew] for sure" she wouldn't be sent home.

At the judging, Wencel served as guest judge. At each contestant's individual assessment, their "professional judgement" was put to the test when they were asked to select the girl they thought should be eliminated. It was revealed that four of the girls chose Sisi. Tenika was overall judged better than the previous week, though McKenzie noted that she disliked her facial expression. Heather is called "strong", but it was said that she had "trouble with her face". Alanna was told to feminize her body language. Sisi's photo was called "stunning"; Venoit in particular was ecstatic about it. Jeanne commented that Ylenia looked like a mannequin in her picture. Brandi and Dawn were in the bottom two, and Dawn was eliminated, because her "beauty" wasn't "enough".

Episode 3: Walk This Way

Upon returning home after the elimination, Andrea was quick to take Tricia's advice, shaving her arms. The next day, the contestants traveled to a bowling alley where they were greeted by a shortshort-clad Stacey McKenzie. McKenzie, a runway model herself, was to teach and evaluate the girls. The models, wearing bowling shoes, strutted their stuff down the alley, first displaying their own "personal" walks.

McKenzie was generally displeased with the performance of the girls, though she noted Alanna's as being exceptional. McKenzie expected Tenika to be more aggressive, given her usual demeanor, describing her look as "dead". She also commented that Andrea "[needed] so much work". Stacey preceded to explain to the girls her "three-second rule", meaning that at the end of the runway, a model should strike three poses before turning around and walking back. Previously solely impressed with Alanna, McKenzie stated that Sisi took it to a "whole new level".

After their lesson in walking with McKenzie, the girls headed to a locker room where clothes were awaiting them. They were explained that they would be doing a fashion show for a rugby team. During the fashion show, Brandi "pulls a Janet Jackson", exposing her breast momentarily. During the evaluation of the walks, McKenzie notes that Brandi handled the "nip slip" professionally, that Andrea was "so awkward", that Ylenia was too "reserved", that Heather needed to give more expression, and that Natalie needed to tone down her "booty". After the models had finished, the rugby players gave their own impromptu, mock fashion show, many of them stripping their shirts. Tenika coyly introduced her newfound ally Andrea to one of the rugby players who hailed from Whitby, Ontario, her hometown. Andrea apparently received his phone number. McKenzie chose Brandi as the winner since she followed instructions to a tee. As a reward, Brandi would be treated to use of the "secret bathroom" of the house, as well as a pedicure.

Once back at the home it was evident that Natalie was not feeling as happy or well as her fellow contestants. She admitted that she was not feeling the same "vibes" as them. The models all gathered in front of the television to receive "Tricia Mail" on a DVD, in which Helfer hints to the nature of the next days photoshoot, making a remark about one's "drive", an allusion to vehicles. Meanwhile, Brandi relaxed in the jacuzzi of the "secret bathroom", drinking an expensive wine and eventually becoming intoxicated. While drunk, Brandi and a few of the other girls decided during the night to relax in the hot tub. Brandi, wearing her iPod entered the water, submerging her mp3 player and ruining it. Brandi was quite saddened by the loss of her songs, calling her boyfriend to console her.

The next day, the contestants went to a farm, which would act as the set for their next photoshoot. In the photoshoot, the girls were to model Cadillac vehicles while wearing Birk's diamonds. The $2.5 million dollar surprise advertised in commercials for the episode turned out to be the cumulative worth of the diamond-studded jewellery provided by Birk's. Natalie chided her fellow contestants in their awe of the bling-bling, musing that she was perhaps not pretentious enough for the "[modeling] industry". Phillip Bloch, who acted as a director of sorts for the girls, described that he wanted the models to exhibit restlessness, impatience and anxiety as if they were awaiting something. Alanna was relatively confused during the shoot. Bloch commented that she needed to "master" her movement. Heather was noted for her lack of emotion. Of Sisi, Bloch surmised that in a photoshoot with her there would probably be two shots that would be "magic" and sixty-eight that would be "Huh?" Brandi did quite well. Bloch said that of the seventy frames there were a "million" good shots.

At judging, Bloch made another appearance as a guest judge. The challenge for the individual assessments of the contestants again focused on the theme of walking. The girls selected a pair of shoes each, all in different and varying styles, from boxes and walked for the panel. The judges noted that Brandi's photograph was of high quality, as well as those of Ylenia and Andrea being lavishly praised. In the end, it came down to Tenika and Natalie. The latter was sent home.

Episode 4: Topping It All Off

Episode 5: In the Hot Seat

After Heather's elimination, Tenika confessed that she felt Heather was her choice for elimination, and that the judges were seeing what she had been seeing.

The girls then went to an old-style Victorian house for their next photo shoot. They were introduced to their co-star, a falcon named Horace. They were to pose in Victorian-style dresses with their co-star, and also put on a muted face, but with bold eyebrows.

After the shot, Tricia came to encourage the girls. She then formed a formal group shot for the girls. She wanted to create an atmosphere of a dysfunctional family.

After the shoot, the girls returned home as usual. However, great tension between Tenika and Sisi occurred the next. Sisi complained that Tenika was using her blowdryer up until 1:00 in the morning last night, and felt that Tenika showed no remorse for her fellow roommates, who were trying to get some sleep. Sisi told Tenika to stop. The next morning, Tenika asked Sisi why she would be so inconsiderate and rude. Sisi is dumbfounded, and tried to get some people for back up, as she believed that people were trying to sleep, but couldn't because of Tenika's blowdryer. No one backed her up, though. Ylenia chastised Sisi for trying to drag the other contestents into the argument.

The next challenge for the remaining six was a crash course in media training. They got a mock, on location, television interview with Jeanne Beker and print style interview with Michael Gross, author, journalist and guest judge.

Michael fired question after question to the girls. So did Jeanne. Ultimately, they picked Sisi to be the winner of the television interview test and Ylenia to win the print interview test. The girls won gift certificates to chic boutiques in Victoria, and signed copies of Jeanne and Michael's books.

At elimination, the evaluation challenge was a sequel to yesterday's challenge. Guest judge Michael Gross fired question after question, but this time, the questions were even tougher to answer.

Tenika and Ylenia ended up in the bottom 2. Tenika was the one to go, as the judges still felt that she was shooting unimpressive pictures, and that she was abrasive and manipulative.
