Wikipedia:Requests for investigation

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
This is an old revision of this page, as edited by Vicki Rosenzweig (talk | contribs) at 10:48, 21 April 2002 (Bryan wasn't jumping the gun; I've blocked this person's IP). The present address (URL) is a permanent link to this revision, which may differ significantly from the current revision.

The purpose of this page is to provide instant notice of vandalism taking place. However, please do not lable isolated instances of text deletions, replacements or odd additions as VANDALISM unless they are overtly lewd or offensive. More often than not, this is just a visitor to the site experimenting with how to use it -- labeling them as a VANDAL is a sure way of ensuring they will not become contributors. Only add alerts to this page of true VANDALISM such as a systematic attack on several articles. Above all, please be polite at first and give the person the benefit of the doubt until they prove they deserve otherwise.

CURRENT ALERTS

  • 194.117.133.xxx deleted Alleanza Nazionale, is promoting his website ukonline.gov.uk, and a variety of other things that need watching - doesn't look like it's outright vandalism, though, I may be jumping the gun. Bryan Derksen Between the attacks on the UK site he didn't like, and the deletion of all content on Wikipedians:Italy, I decided enough was enough, and have blocked this user. Vicki Rosenzweig
  • 65.56.45.xxx While an edit of Ed was merely humor that was inapproriate for Wikipedia, the user then added a derogatory, angry comment to the user page of -- April including swearing in the summary and in the comment itself. IP ban in order? A: Only if it happens again.
  • 67.114.47.xxx vandalism of half-life
  • 62.254.0.xxx is adding loads of exclamation points and extraneous ranting to the Physics page.

  • 62.98.178.xxx, in a burst of spite, also placed a big "Your edit will not be saved" on meta.wikipedia.com's main page. Whatta w- nevermind.
  • 62.98.178.xxx, also known as 62.98.140.xxx and 62.98.136.xxx, replaced "Sexism" article with the "Diatribe Against Sexism" from meta. This is part of a long patter (see below and talk page).
  • 62.98.136.xxx is doing a wide variety of things that border on vandalism. It started with the "Penis Bird", then he dumped a ton of Household cyclopedia articles on here that are hopelessly out of date, he's extending Pi and other mathematical constants of a like type to page length strings of numbers, and finally he posts a purported piece of Scientology's teachings (as seen in another person's leaflet) immediately after the qualification that people have been sued for posting such things. I'm not a particularly active participant, but seems he needs a ban...

Here's how it works:

When you notice what you believe to be an act of vandalism at work, take note of that person's IP number or handle.

Edit this page, adding the person's IP number, the date and the approximate time (server) of the alleged vandalism.

Then put the person's IP or handle in the Summary box and hit save. (Important!!! Otherwise people have to open the vandalism page to see what's happening.)

VANDALISM IN PROGRESS appears in caps on Recent Changes, along with the id of the alleged vandal, and the rest of Wikipedia can jump in to decide whether damage has actually occurred. If there is consensus that an attack was correctly identified, everyone will help repair the damage (see guidelines below for how to remove undesired changes).

If no attack occurred (e.g. it was just a difference of opinion about what is appropriate content or style, not intentional defacement), you should probably apologize to the person you branded as a vandal.

When the attack is finished, come back and remove the information you added.

Please only use this page for geniune malicious vandalism, and only for a sustained attack. If you make any changes to this page for other reasons, check the minor edit box, or put something like "Not calling a vandalism alert" in the Summary box.

Notes and further guidelines:

When you list times, please modify to "server" time for the international community. You can obtain the current server time from the preferences tab.

How to remove undesired changes:

  1. click "view other revisions" for the damaged page.
  2. click "View" for a previous version.
  3. click "Edit Revision x of this page" (located at the bottom of the page)
  4. save the old version.

If you wish to minimise your actions, just enter the letters "VR" as a comment, and choose "minor edit". This informs the other editors (if they choose to view minor edits in their preferences) that a page has been repaired.
