Hamilton Bohannon

During the 1970's, drummer Hamilton Bohannon helped create the musical style that would become known as "disco". His music featured an insistent beat, backed by a distinctive clipped guitar sound that strongly influenced later acts such as Chic and Talking Heads. His "South African Man" is perhaps the only hit single ever in a 9/8 time signature.

Hamilton Bohannon was born on March 7th, 1942 in the small Georgia town of Newnan, about an hour's drive southwest of Atlanta. Hamilton grew up in a working class family of middle income. After high school Bohannon attended Clark Atlanta University where he graduated with a B.A. degree in musical education. Upon graduation he began teaching before accepting a job as drummer for a band that included Jimi Hendrix in it's line-up. He came to the attention of Stevie Wonder, who appointed him drummer in his touring band in 1965.

Bohannon relocated to Detroit and worked for Wonder from 1965 to 1967. Over those two years Bohannon's style impressed the hierarchy at Motown Records to such an extent that they made him top bandleader, responsible for live arrangements for all Motown's top acts. When Motown relocated to Los Angeles, Bohannon stayed in Detroit, assembling his own band.

He signed with Dakar/Brunswick in 1972 and by early 1973 he had his first release with the album "Stop And Go." Five more albums for the labels followed: "Keep On Dancin'" (1974), "Mighty Bohannon" (1975), "South African Man" (1975), "Inside Out" (1975), and "Dance Your Ass Off" (1975). Although several singles did well in the U.K.it wasn't until 1975's "Foot Stompin' Music" that he began to make waves in the American club scene.

Oddly enough during the disco boom of 1973-1978 Bohannon's career was relatively quiet compared to others that struck disco gold in that period, yet he churned out album after album. His contract with Brunswick/Dakar ended in 1976 and with out missing a beat he signed with Mercury and released "Phase 2" in 1977. That year he scored hits with "Disco Symphony" and "Andrea."

His second release for Mercury was 1978's "Summertime Groove." "Summertime Groove" exemplifies the Bohannon sound, as does the funky, potent "Let's Start The Dance." This song propelled the album to the top of the charts and was a huge summer smash thanks to Carolyn Crawford's vocals (He subsequently produced Crawford's solo release, "Coming On Strong," that same year),. "Me And The Gang," "The Street Dance," and the lesser of the rump-shakers, "Listen To The Children Play," continue the party atmosphere. This is pure uncut boogie music. The only ballad is a wistful winner titled "I Wonder Why." He followed this with four more releases for Mercury, "On My Way," "Cut Loose," "Too Hot To Hold" and "Music In The Air."

Bohannon albums carbon each other: all have shuffling grooves, heavy rhythms, and quality ballads; the only things that change are the personnel and the song titles. Liz Lands replaces Carolyn Crawford as the feature vocalist on his final 1980 Mercury release. Both recorded at Motown and, despite making good records, failed to scale the charts at Hitsville U.S.A. Lands' vocals elevate "Music In The Air" above the mediocre level. Lands has an amazing vocal range that reminds me of a singing flute. She does an admirable job on the Originals' classic "Baby I'm For Real"; her finest moment occurs on "Thoughts And Wishes," a song with jazz roots — her soprano soars to crystal-shaking heights as she rips into the lyrics. As always, Bohannon has some dance grooves to shake your booty too; "The Funk Walk," "The Hammer" and "Feel Like Dancin'" will get you up and down on the dance floor. Unfortunately, like most Bohannon releases, this one appealed to the hardcore Bohannon fans and didn't find a broader range of fans and buyers.

He started Phase II Records in 1980, he also switched to recording under the simpler banner of Bohannon. He scored another chart topper with a reworking of "Let's Start The Dance" in 1981. "Let's Start 2 Dance Again" featured Atlanta rapper Dr. Perri Johnson, with his 15 minutes of fame, rapping over the instrumental passages. A remix of the remix followed and then a 1983 attempt at reworking the reworked hit with "Let's Start The Dance 3." Needless to say at this point it had run it's course. His albums from 1981 to 1984, "Goin' For Another One," "Alive," "One Step Ahead," "Make Your Body Move" and "Bohannon Drive" produced nine R&B charters, but none matched his 1978 pop success.

Bohannon dominated the clubs and R&B charts in disco's heyday, but found the going tougher in the 1980's. By the time of his 1989 session, his one and only for MCA Records, there was a whole new sound among dance fans. House, techno, and British and European dance was lighter, faster and not as rhythmically heavy as the music that Bohannon championed. "Here Comes Bohannon" put as much emphasis on Altrinna Grayson's vocals as Bohannon's arrangements. She was a fine singer in the genre, but Bohannon didn't make much impact with this one. One 12" single, "House Train," gained little club play and for all purposes it seemed that club music had passed Bohannon by.

He has spent the recent years resting happily in Atlanta with his family and past earnings (he wrote, arranged and produced all of his albums, maximizing his take of the proceedings) until a wave of sampling sparked renewed interest in his work. His work has been sampled by Richard "Humpty" Vission, That Petrol Emotion, Jose Melendez, Jay-Z, DJ Lynnwood, DJ Irene, and Class A Felony to name a few. Compilations of his past glory were quickly assembled, and now most of his best moments are available on CD for all to enjoy.

Ed Kavalee

Ed Kavalee is the unofficial co-host of Triple M's Get This. Initially contacted by the show's host Tony Martin to panel the show, Kavalee assured Martin he was capable of doing the job. However, upon a trial run, it became evident he could do no such thing.

Richard Marsland now does the job.

Kavalee is said to consume "two plates of weetbix and a sandwich" during the course of the broadcast, which barely runs an hour.

Titans Hunt

The Titans Hunt storyline is the basis for a story arc featuring DC Comics New Titans. As the Titans were readying for their anniversary party several members were attacked and abducted by the Wildbeast Society. Even Titans affiliates such as Aqualad and Golden Eagle were attacked ending in the death of the latter hero. A group of people hired by Stephen Dayton, father to Changeling Garfield Logan, went to search for the New Titans. This group consisted of Deathstroke the Terminator, Arella, Raven's mother and Dayton himself. Along the way Troia accompanied them as being one of the only Titans who escaped the hunt. After an arc of several issues Phantasm, a disguised Danny Chase, and Pantha an experiment of the Wildbeast Society also joined to look for the Titans. Several facts were revealed during the end of the storyline. Arella had actually carried the soul of the Godess Azar within her, a fact that was revealed when she went up against the head Wildbeast in her home in Arizona. Also that Dick Grayson had infiltrated the Wildbeast Society when they tried to capture him, defeating and stealing the armor from one of his attackers. This allowed Danny Chase the chance to escape being kidnapped and spurned his change to Phantasm. It was also revealed that Jericho, the mute son of the Terminator, had actually become the leader for the Wildbeast Society and was mute no longer. In a scene between Dick and Jericho Cyborg was seen in a rocket in which Jericho sent into space. The rocket practically destroyed Cyborg as he was known. In an epic battle that lead the group to the Remains of Azarath the Titans were found bound to a machine. It was then revealed that Jericho had in fact been posessed by the souls of Azarath. It seems that during Trigon's final moments after he was killed by those very souls, his essence merged with them creating a twisted version of the once pacifistic people. While Raven was cleansed of Trigon's evil energy the combined souls inhabited that of Jericho. At first they could do little more than plant insidious thoughts inside the mute, but as their power grew so too did their control. Jericho released his souls upon the Titans, many of whom ended up being posessed. In a climactic battle Jericho was killed by his father but the Souls of Azarath were still undefeated. They posessed Raven, turning her back into a red skinned avatar of Trigon. It was then that Raven's mother and Danny Chase used their combine might and the power of Azar's teaching to forever cleanse away the evil of Trigon. In the midst of battle Raven's body was destroyed as were Arella's and Danny's, who ultimately merged with the now cleansed souls of Azarath to become Phantasm. This story arc also introduced the Team Titans and Baby Wildbeast.

Himiko (卑弥呼, c.175?–248?), also read as Pimiku, was a female ruler of Yamataikoku, an ancient state-like formation thought to have been located either in the Yamato region or in northern Kyushu of present-day Japan. Few records are available and little is known about her, and the location of Yamataikoku is the subject of a great, often emotionally charged, debate that has been raging since the late Edo period.

According to an ancient Chinese history book, Chronicles of the Three Kingdoms, Himiko was a shaman who controlled people through her paranormal abilities. The Nihonshoki, an old Japanese history book, notes that Himiko was actually Empress Jingū Kogo, the mother of Emperor Ōjin, but historians disagree. Some speculate that she is conflated with Amaterasu, the Japanese sun goddess.

The Chinese chronicles book (that was compiled in 297 CE) refers to the inhabitants of the Japanese islands simply as the Wa, literally, "The Little People".

Furthermore, it describes a fragmented political structure of more than a hundred or more separate tribes, nominally ruled by a female shaman, Queen Himiko.

Some have, due to intuition, proposed that Himiko would have been a ruler of Jomon period, an archaeological age when the religion was a goddess religion, as indicated by figurine evidence, and the population generally was Austronesian/Malayo-Polynesian, ancestors of e.g the today Ainu peoples. However, that timing is patently incorrect, since the latest discoveries of Jomon remnants are from c 300 BCE, five centuries earlier than Himiko's lifetime as anchored by said Chinese records. Moreover, much of the other evidence, including her name, links Himiko to proto-Yamato people, who just migrated there in late Jomon era and started Yayoi period, into which Himiko and her people are tentatively classified. Traditions of Jomon culture, such as reverence to female godheads and a priestess-led society, as well as very large villages and still small, tribal groups being units of political power, in a proto-agricultural economic setting, may have influenced the societies of Yayoi settlers and be one of reasons of the cultural structure of Himiko society.

According to an ancient Korean history book, Samguk Sagi, Himiko, as queen of Japan, sent an embassy to King Adalla of Silla in May 172. However, Chinese history books record Silla as having been established on 356, which casts doubt on this claim.

Himiko never married and it is recorded that her younger brother assisted her as a political advisor. She is said to have had one thousand female servants and to have never appeared in public.

In ca. 188 CE, Himiko ascended to paramountcy and in 248 CE she died. There are indications that a tribal king, posthumously now known as Emperor Shujin, raised military host against queen Himiko or her successor (reportedly another shaman, her niece or other relative), ultimately conquering their position and establishing male rule with headquarters in central Japan.

The precise pronunciation of her name is unknown. The Himiko reading derives from her name as represented in kanji, which was written 卑彌呼 prior to mid-20th century kanji reforms. Himiko may have been a chinese corruption of himemiko, princess-priestess, or lady shaman. The name is said to mean "Sun Daughter". There are assessments that she is the real person upon whom the myth of sun goddess Amaterasu is built.
