Kenjutsu is a classical Japanese martial art, "the art of the sword".

It always begins with the sword already drawn with an aggressive intent (in contrast with iaido). The practice is done by katas and by actual cutting and thrusting of the blade agains water-soaked rolled mats and bamboo poles. The practice tool is either bokken (wooden sword) or real sword (katana, tachi, etc.). No fencing armor or other special suit is worn.

There are no belt colors in kenjutsu, but only titles: Deshi (student), Renshi (instructor), Kyoshi (teacher) and Hanshi (master).

Around the middle of the 14th century, kenjutsu developed into a new martial art, kendo.
