Today Is the Day
Today is the Day is a widely influential rock band that saw its beginnings take root in Nashville, Tennessee. The brainchild of Steve Austin, Today Is The Day has been recording and releasing albums since the early-1990s when the band released their debut EP, entitled "Supernova," in 1992. This self-financed released garnered the attention of Amphetamine Reptile Records who signed the band in February of 1993. Today is the Day's music is a unique mix of styles; it is complex and articulate like that of progressive rock band King Crimson, yet noisy and aggressive at the same time. At times, critics have characterized Today is the Day as noise rock.
Today is the Day's first full-length recording was 1994's Supernova, released on Amphetamine Reptile Records. Two more CDs on that label followed, then the band was signed by Relapse Records.
In 1997, Today is the Day recorded a song for a split 7" record with Coalesce. That song was a cover of Black Sabbath's "Sabbath Bloody Sabbath". The record was released on Hydra Head Records.
They made a cameo as a "Christian Rock Band" in Duck! The Carbine High Massacre.
Today is the Day's 2002 release 'Sadness will Prevail' included work by guest musician Mark Morton of the rock band Lamb of God.
As of 2004, the band has released nine full-length recordings.
2006 saw the launch of Steve Austin's own record label, SuperNova Records, which was founded in order to properly release Today Is The Day material. As of July 2006, SuperNova has released DVDs of live shows from 1995 and 1996, as well as reissuing a remastered version of their Willpower record, previously released on Amphetamine Reptile Records. In addition to this, SuperNova Records is an outlet for Steve Austin's side project Taipan. Taipan's debut album, entitled "1002: A Rock Odyssey," saw its release via the SuperNova Records website in May of 2006. Taipan consists of Steve Austin on guitars/vocals, Chris Debari of Today Is The Day on bass, and Patrick Kennedy on drums.
More SuperNova Records releases are slated for the near future, including a reissuing of Supernova, a second Taipan record, and Axis Of Eden, Today Is The Day's new studio album.
