Washington County is a county located in the U.S. State of Oregon. The county is just a few miles west of downtown Portland. Washington County is home to 445,342 (2000 Census) residents. The county seat is Hillsboro. Other cities of note include Tigard, Beaverton and parts of Portland.

Geography

The county has a total area of 1,881 km2 (726 mi2). 1,874 km2 (724 mi2) of it is land and 7 km2 (3 mi2) of it is water. The total area is 0.36% water.

Demographics

As of 2000, there are 445,342 people, 169,162 households, and 114,015 families residing in the county. The population density is 238/km2 (615/mi2). There are 178,913 housing units at an average density of 95 persons/km2 (247 persons/mi2). The racial makeup of the county is 82.19% White, 1.15% African American, 0.65% Native American, 6.68% Asian, 0.30% Pacific Islander, 5.86% from other races, and 3.17% from two or more races. 11.17% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 169,162 households out of which 35.60% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.50% are married couples living together, 9.00% have a woman whose husband does not live with her, and 32.60% are non-families. 24.70% of all households are made up of individuals and 6.70% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.61 and the average family size is 3.14.

In the county, the population is spread out with 26.90% under the age of 18, 9.30% from 18 to 24, 34.10% from 25 to 44, 20.90% from 45 to 64, and 8.80% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 33 years. For every 100 females there are 99.10 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 97.00 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $52,122, and the median income for a family is $61,499. Males have a median income of $43,304 versus $31,074 for females. The per capita income for the county is $24,969. 7.40% of the population and 4.90% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 8.30% are under the age of 18 and 5.30% are 65 or older.
