Glenties (Irish: Na Gleanntaí meaning The Glens) is a small town in the northwest of Ireland in central County Donegal. The town is situated where two glens meet, north west of the Blue Stack Mountains. Glenties is a previous winner of the National Tidy Towns competition.

Around Glenties

One of the towns most stricking buildings is its unusual church, St. Connell's Church, which was built in 1974 to replace the old church. The building has a flat roof that slopes to the ground at sharp angle. The orignial bell from the first church is still used today in the newer church.

Glenties is one of only two places in all of Donegal served by rail. The Fintown - Glenties Railway line is more of a tourist attraction than a piece of important infastructure, sweeping through the beauiful scenary of Donegals interior. The line was built in 1895 and reopened in 1995.

Tourism

The town has a reasonably large tourist trade and boosts a hotel (The Highland) and a variety of lively pubs (which often have traditional Irish Music). There are several guest houses around the town. The majority of visitors come for the areas scenic beauty and to ride the railway line.
