The University of Wales, Aberystwyth was founded in 1872 as University College Wales, the first university institution to be established in Wales. It is a Member Institution of the University of Wales, which it joined upon its foundation in 1894 - prior to this students had been submitted for examinations of the University of London. As of 2003, the university had 7,000 students. It is often known simply as "Aber" to its students.
