List of hypothetical Solar System objects
Appearance
Hypothetical planets are planets and other heavenly bodies that have been suggested as possibly exiting (or wishfully existing), but have never been proven to actually exist.
Examples of such hypothetical planets in astronomy or in ancient mythologies include:
Planets which would have a direct influence on Earth:
- Counter-Earth: An Earth-like planet on Earth's orbit but on the other side of the Sun (hypothesized by the Pythagoreans; used by John Norman as the setting for his Gor novels),
- Theia, a hypothetical planet which was destroyed in a collision with Earth according to the giant impact theory.
- Nibiru/Marduk, a hypothetical 12th planet from Sumerian astronomy, which by its collision with Tiamet (Tiamat), a planet that was between Mars and Jupiter, formed the planet Earth and the asteroid belt and comets. Its survived inhabitants called Anunnaki (Ningischzida) afterward came to Earth. Some sources speak about the same planet, possibly being a brown dwarf star and still orbiting the Sun with a perihelion passage some 3600 years ago and assumed orbital period of about 3600 to 3760 years or 3741 years according to Mayan astronomers. (from a book called The 12th Planet by Zechariah Sitchin; this is presented as a serious theory, but is widely considered false by scientists.)
Planets with independent influence:
- Planet X (a tenth beyond Pluto),
- Vulcan, inside the orbit of Mercury (like Planet X, it was proposed to explain orbital peculiarities),
Other heavenly bodies include:
