Originally, Epitaph Records was just a name and PO Box number used to label Bad Religion's independently produced records. It has gradually expanded, and turned into one of the largest independent record labels in the world, if not the largest.

The current president of the label is the band's guitarist Brett Gurewitz.

In 1987, Epitaph released it's first record as a proper label. It was the band L7's self-titled album, and it was distributed by Chameleon. However, it wasn't until Bad Religion's Suffer album that Epitaph started distributing the records themselves.

Gradually, more bands signed to Epitaph - some now incredibly famous and important punk rock bands. NOFX and Rancid are examples.

From then, Epitaph has grown to have over 80 artists, and has two sisters labels - Anti and HellCat.
