Temporary Fix for Javascript Error Messages (hopefully fixed in v1.2.0)
For all users experiencing annoying though non-fatal "Internet Explorer Script Error" messages, I regret to inform you that I have yet to find an absolute cure for this problem. I originally hypothesized that it was a component installation problem; however, after multiple rendentions of setup files on several machines experiencing this problem, I have concluded that the problem does not result from the actions of my program, but rather from the incorrect rendering of Wikipedia pages by Javascript engines. When navigating Wikipedia (and likely other java-enabled sites as well) in Internet Explorer, you may notice a small exclamation point icon on the status bar and/or the text "Error on page." This is the subtle and non-intrusive way that IE handles non-fatal JS exceptions, by supressing them to the toolbar, yet the browser control incorporated into VandalProof often handles the errors by displaying an annoying message with confusing and misleading text. As I cannot modify the.ocx distributed by Microsoft, I cannot change the way that the browser control deals with Javascript errors.
Now for all the users asking, "I thought this section was titled Temporary Fix for Javascript Error Messages," I have indeed found a highly unorthodoxed way to fix this problem. I have created a very simple Windows API application that can run in the background while VandalProof is running that, upon identifying IE script error messages, will close the warnings immediately. While the background application is running, you may see a slight flicker on the screen and perhaps hear a beep (though this hasn't been the case on the machines where I've tested it), but the messages will no longer impair your ability to use VandalProof.
If you are having Javascript error messages, please download and save the file CloseScriptErr.exe (also available here and here) to the same directory as VandalProof. Whenever you want to run VandalProof warning-free, simply run the CloseScriptErr executable, and then run VandalProof. Only close the dialog it loads once you are done using VandalProof.
Whether or not the simple app helps you, or if you have any other, perhaps more orthodoxed, solutions to the IE script error problem, please let me know in this section. Thanks, and I hope this helps. AmiDaniel ( Talk) 03:58, 16 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I use the new IE7 beta, and i'm not getting any script errors. However, as IE7 is a beta, I advise you to take caution with it. MPN23:43, 3 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I'm not using IE7 beta; everything I've developed has been using IE6 and a lot of the OLE automation and techniques I'm using were developed for IE5. I'm not going to touch IE7 for at least another couple of years — Microsoft has this tendency to take simple and useful software, like word processors for example, and make them perpetually more complex and less functional with each release. Everything I've seen of IE7 has been graphics, graphics, graphics, which, as you can tell from the bland and ugly interface of VP, doesn't interest me at all (I'm probably the only person still using XP with a modified "classic" look). So, not to worry — I won't touch the IE7 beta; thus there's no reason to be afraid! Thanks for the comment though — perhaps MS did manage to fix something with their new browser. AmiDaniel ( Talk) 00:20, 4 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I only use XP on my laptop, and I've only allowed it to remain because people are always asking for help with XP boxen. All my other active machines run 2000, except 1 Red Hat. Rich Farmbrough 09:22 7 May2006 (UTC).
I have an even quicker fix for this problem, delete all the contents of your monobook.js file and then slowly readd them until you find the script causing the messages. Wikipedia should only give an occasional JS error, repeated errors are caused by buggy user-scripts.--SomeStranger(t|c)01:34, 13 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
(reset indent) I've found a fix for some of the problems causing the IE script errors. Open IE, Go to Tools > Internet Options, 'Advanced' tab, and click 'Restore Defaults'. This may not always work, depending on the issue causing the script errors, but it works for me. --Draicone(talk)08:27, 8 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
What version of IE do you have installed? InstaView doesn't work with 5 and below so that might be triggering it. Also, what version of Java are you using? Do the error messages say something to the extent of "document.getobjectbyid(...) is null"? AmiDaniel ( Talk) 02:34, 10 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I just tried VandalProof, and encountered the following problems:
Couldn't get the "My watchlist", "Recent Changes" and "User Contribs" tabs to list anything.
I tried Rollback + {{test1-n}} option. It issued a warning message to the IP, but didn't rollback.
Hopefully, I'm doing something wrong that can be easily corrected (as opposed to there being a bug in the code that's hard to trace.) Regards, deeptrivia ( talk) 03:48, 11 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I might be able to the core of it, but if you could please answer a few questions: 1) What OS are you running? 2) What version of IE are you running? 3) What Wikipedia skin are you using? 4) What other scripts/tools are you running? 5) Are you using Enhanced Recent Changes (that will cause VP's RC to malfunction)? and 6) How did you install the tool (saving the.exe or using the cab)? VP actually does (or should) leave edit summaries for all of its edits, so if it didn't for you, that's another bug. P.S. I hope you don't mind that I moved this up to bugs; I'm just trying to keep things organized. AmiDaniel ( Talk) 05:05, 11 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Aha, problem solved. Is Enhanced Recent Changes on by default? I don't remember enabling it. Anyway I turned it off and now all is cool. Sorry for the confusion. Soo19:04, 3 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Question: adding approved users
Just a wee bug for when you return from your break (not earlier!!) Seems VP when you approve a user will clear the entire list of those waiting approval instead of just the approved user. Thanks mate - Gl e n T C (Stollery)06:12, 30 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I assume you're referring to this diff. What happened there was that there was no line break between the two names, so it merely listed the first name in the awaiting approval list, and when you approved one user it assumed the list was empty. I'll stick a note on that section later on (you may have noticed that any notes, etc., placed in that list get lost with the next list update), and I'm sorry about that. I sure don't understand why it's so difficult for users to put their names in the right format... AmiDaniel ( Talk) 22:55, 1 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Easiest way would be to add an * to the front of the {{user2 | YOUR_USERNAME}} instructions so it reads: *{{user2 | YOUR_USERNAME}}. I did do this but yes the update reverted it which is no prob:) - Gl e n T C (Stollery)23:01, 1 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Can we have the program check to make sure that the format is followed?? If it is not it can alert the moderator before he blanks the new user list? Eagle ( talk) ( desk) 14:55, 5 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Fixed Moderator update is not working
Updates to Commen problems by me, are not showing up when I go to double check the program output. Frankly I havent a clue... unless it is not recognizing me as a moderator...(how that can be I'm not sure as I can access mod tools as I type). Have fun with this new buggie... I have more when the new version comes out. Eagle talk08:09, 7 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, I did a null edit to reset the page to your version. It appears to be because of the space; I think I've fixed it in my version, but I'm not quite sure. I tested the mods out with User:AmiDaniel TestAccount (which has a space) earlier and had no problems, but for some reason Wikipedia renders the space in your user name as a space rather than an underscore when linking to your userpage... strange... AmiDaniel ( Talk) 08:21, 7 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Gee, all the modern programming apps and we still get bugs from formatting...great:-).
Alright. I have a problem here. When I use vandaproof, I am able to log in and edit normally fine... but when I hit any of the rollback buttons, it doesn't revert. anyone know why?-- A c1983fan ( talk • contribs) 19:18, 6 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
This is usually the result of not having popups installed, but I see you already have it in your monobook. Try doing a hard refresh (Ctrl + F5) and try again. AmiDaniel ( Talk) 20:59, 6 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I tried that, but it didn't make a difference. for some reason, the edit simply saves the latest version, creating a null edit which is not added to the history.-- A c1983fan ( talk • contribs) 22:05, 6 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Ok two things,
1) can you give us an idea of what your settings are??? (in "my preferences") and what operating system and internet explorer version are you using??
(edit conflict again) Well, you have to be using some version of IE. Go to Start/Run, and type in "iexplore". Then goto Help / About Internet Explorer, and get back to me with the version number. Also, what Wikipedia skin are you using? (It should be set to monobook) Also, try clicking this link, and tell me if it reverts the page. Thanks. AmiDaniel ( Talk) 22:19, 7 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, you do you have IE on your computer, you need that because VandalProof uses IE's cookies. Get IE and your problem is fixed:-) Check your preferences and make sure enhanced recent changes is off. Good luck Eagle talk22:15, 7 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Umm...I did read the known bugs, and that one's not listed. If you guys are going to hound me for not reporting bugs, then hound me when I do...what am I to do?-- Zpb5206:06, 18 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Woa, calm down; nobody's hounding you. This is a bug that existed in v1.0 (thus why mboverload suggested it was a known bug), but that I believed I had fixed in the current version; however, it seems to still be occurring. Just a thought: Did you maybe load the user's talk page before WP:AIV finished loading? In the past what happened was that AIV would load and then go straight back to the user's talk page, but I believe that has been fixed. I'm just briefly dropping by right now and will likely be unavailable until late tomorrow, but I'll look into it a bit more once I get the chance. Thanks for reporting the bug! AmiDaniel ( talk) 06:14, 18 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
No, I let VP run its course on this. I didn't click anything else until I saw it had stopped working on its own. As a matter of fact, if you'll look at the edit, you'll see it happened again when I tried to report the user again. -- Zpb5215:08, 18 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Hey AmiDaniel, I just installed 1.2 (not moments ago), and it seems that running under plain User permissions, I get a Runtime error '75' "Path/File access error" after the "You have sucessfully logged into VandalProof as Charlie Huggard" message displays. The error does not happen running under Administrator permissions, but it would be nice if I could use the tool under plain User permissions (I don't trust IE enough to allow anything using IE to run with Administrator rights). Like the Bad Title error, I'll note that I'm running Windows XP SP2, IE7 (can't get rid of the cursedthing >_<), and Full Control has been granted to the normal user to the VandalProof directory and all sub files. Regards Charlie(@CIRL | talk)03:18, 21 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Problem noted. Unfortunately, I'm going to have to look into this tomorrow, as I suddenly have things to take care of in the real world right now. My apologies, but thanks for reporting the problem. AmiDaniel ( talk) 03:29, 21 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I understand, too, and just for the protocol. I have the same problem and I will not use it with an Windows administrator login. JKW09:12, 10 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Right - When I first loaded the program (1.2), I got JS script errors everytime recent changes was refreshed. I went to the Watchlist tab and told it to retrieve, at which point I had a fatal runtime error and it closed. Now whenever I use it, I get non-fatal runtime errors on both watchlist and on every recent changes refresh. Ian13/talk10:53, 22 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
You need to do a hard refresh of your monobook.js file in internet explorer. That should fix your problem. Tarret14:12, 22 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Damn, I thought I fixed this problem, but it doesn't seem to be the case. Try the temporary fix at the top of this page--it's not a particularly elegant solution, but it seems to work. I may have to build that in if I can't find a better way to fix it--I understand how frustrating it must be. AmiDaniel (talk) 02:31, 23 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Right. This works fine when I blank my monobook. It seems likely that this problem is caused by some dodgy JS (I did just upgrade to 1.2.1 too). If this is the case, then it may be worth taking a look at my JS to find out whats wrong for fixing/to note it/add a catcher to the program. Thanks! Ian13/talk13:37, 28 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Appears to be fine... but you have a very large monobook. I suggest removing some of the functions in there that you don't use. (I noticed that VP has problems with monobook functions that change the appearnce of the edit box(window). For sure the toolbar tab changers that you have in there are ok. The rest I don't have time to read through sorry!Eagletalk02:51, 6 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I seem to be getting the same problem. Except mine says something about Instaview. I used to have it, but then I got rid of it in my monobook.js. However, I am still having the same error repeatedly appear. Will you alert me when you find a permanent solution to this problem? Thanks. Эйрон Кинни (t) 21:43, 9 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Question: Multiple warnings for one edit
One problem that I have noticed is that if a user makes an edit, and multiple VandalProof users notice it and revert it all at the same time, only one actually does the revert but all give warnings. One example is old version of user's page at the point when the user had made only one edit. —Mets501talk02:25, 23 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, I've been aware of this problem for some time but am not entirely sure how to fix it. One thought that I had was that when posting a warning, it could search for a link to the diff that was just reverted (as VP warnings always contain a diff), and if the same diff is found, it would not post the warning. That, of course, would only work to prevent multiple VP warnings, but I think it's a start. Let me think on it a bit, and I'll see if I might be able to implement something. AmiDaniel (talk) 02:28, 23 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Make VP check and see if the user made an edit, by reloading the history after the revert. It will slow it down marginally and the gain is well worth it. Eagletalk02:35, 23 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Ummm, no. I think the slow down is far more than marginal, and I'd rather have a few additional warnings than have everything lag even more. I think checking for the diff will likely suffice, or, if I feel really determined, I might try to work something out with timestamps. AmiDaniel (talk) 02:38, 23 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
When trying to import blacklists/whitelists I get "Run-time error '13' type mismatch"
I get the error when selecting it from the dropdown menu, and Im on 1.2
Is this only me? Is there a way to fix it? Clq17:45, 24 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Hm .. just wondering, how many users do you have in your local whitelist/blacklist? Looks like another instance of this that I forgot to trap. If you simply add one user to your whitelist and one to your blacklist and then click it, it should work. AmiDaniel (talk) 02:25, 26 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I tried again with three users on my whitelist and loads of IPs + two usernames on my blacklist, and it still gives me the same error. Clq08:22, 26 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Question: Report to AIV
NOTE: This appears to be a feature request and not a bug! —— Eagle (ask me for help) 21:31, 21 July 2006 (UTC)
When you report a user to AIV, it does not provide an edit summary. Not a huge issue but it would be nice if that could be fixed. —Mets501talk02:02, 25 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Also, adding to that; It would be nice if it also supported {{IPvandal|ip}} for adding ip adresses. (adds an whois link to the report). Clq18:15, 25 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I was going to implement the IPVandal template but wasn't sure if that had become a permanent addition yet. As for not leaving edit summaries, the dummy that I am, the report to AIV function is still piggy-backing on top of Lupin's popups to leave the edit summary for that one. You can fix it by adding {{subst:navpop}} to your monobook.js file and doing a hard refresh, or you can wait until the next release where I really have made it independent of popups (as I claimed I did with this release). My apologies. AmiDaniel (talk) 02:23, 26 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
This bug manifests itself whenever a user has made multiple changes to a page. If I try to issue a custom rollback, VP prompts me to review all of their changes. If I choose yes, VP does not do anything. --Alphachimptalk17:52, 25 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, let me look into it. The custom rollback is a little bit awkward because it operates from an external private routine contacting a private routine in another module, and so it's possible that certain variables aren't being passed right. An easy solution would be that when you see the same user has edited the page, right-click on a rollback button (to load a diff between the current revision and the last revision by the previous author) and then use custom rollback. A little messy but it works. AmiDaniel (talk)
That's what I've been doing. I just figured that I would give you the heads up on the issue. Thanks for all of your hard work on VP. --Alphachimptalk02:27, 26 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
It isn't supposed to do anything, after you click yes you have to check the other edits from that user (atleast that is how it has always been for me). ILovePlankton(L)14:57, 26 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Speedy Deletion using {{db-reason}}
I placed a deletion for the article Driwash, which is now deleted, using the {{db-reason|commercial advert}} tag. I was surprised to see that I wasn't auto-clicked to the correct display (nor did it show in my contribs). My next edit went through and the warning for User_talk:24.74.0.217 showed the {{db-reason|commercial advert}} that was added from the prior edit (the speedy deletion). I removed that tag and placed comments within that user talk page regarding the suspected bug.
Obviously I'm using VP 1.2.1 as 1.2 doesn't work. The update every setting was at 10 seconds (this sometimes makes menu drop-downs hard to use as each refresh blows away the drop-down menu). Hope this helps. --Geneb1955Talk/CVU06:30, 27 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
VP seems to have problems with adding db tags when you view the first edit to the page. I'm not sure why, but it does, and I'm working on fixing it. When it does that the next time, just click on the article tab and hit it again. AmiDaniel (talk) 03:04, 4 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Fixed Big Pages and VP
Whenever I click on big pages (Golf, Oprah Winfrey to name a couple) it seems to freeze for a minute, then it comes up. It would be nice if it could process the large pages without having a delay.
This is something that's annoyed the hell outta me as well, and so I'm now reworking it to (optionally, of course) retrieve RC from the RSS-feed, meaning that clicking on an item will load it immediately, though you will only see a plain-text diff without the preview. I've also now implemented a precached rollback that works twice as fast (and that by default reverts all edits by the on-top contributor). I guess this will probably be v1.3, and it's probably going to be a while (at least a couple of weeks) before I can release it, but it is suhweet :-). AmiDaniel (talk) 21:07, 29 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
This is very strange. This is how the disambiguation article was on April 19 as 131.162.154.31 restored the deleted material. The next edit by Computerjoe with VP here is very strange as VP inserted the material from Barney & Friends. Also neither of the IP's (68.60.182.219 & 70.241.90.252) in the summary had edited the Barney article. Now look at this where I roll back the Barney & Friends article. Note that the two IP's are the same as that listed by VP. CambridgeBayWeather(Talk)16:14, 29 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
But in the examples you show it's just an odd edit summary and the reversion is OK. In this case an entire article (Barney & Friends) overwrote another (Barney). CambridgeBayWeather(Talk)16:56, 29 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
What I think is that it saw vandalism to "Barney & Friends", but it thought the "&" was some special HTML code, so it ignored the "& Friends" and reverted it on "Barney" --GeorgeMoneyT·C17:04, 29 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I did an experiment: I vandalized Barney & Friends, then VandalProof reverted Barney. After that, I had to revert both of those by hand. So, instead of reverting vandalism, it made more vandalism. --GeorgeMoneyT·C18:48, 29 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Gahh... the damn ampersands again. I think I now have this sorted out in my local copy--it happens because of a bad stacking order in my html-ascii conversion routine. I'll put up a patch ASAP. AmiDaniel (talk) 21:02, 29 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
This also happened to me. A pornographic image was placed on Barney & Friends, I tried to revert using VandalProof (twice). The vandal then mocked me on my user talk page, since it didn't work. I reverted it using Popups. After reading this info, I then went and reverted my inadvertent vandalism of Barney. Ted02:43, 31 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, I'm the latest victim of this bug (thanks to CambridgeBayWeather for the heads up). I manually reverted it, and found that I changed the entire page. I received no vandal mockings myself, though. :P DakPowers (Talk) 21:15, 3 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Some of us have all the luck. I'm sure the vandal knew of the bug and was waiting for some hapless VP user. I guess you can't get any more hapless than me. I'm just glad I found out I had inadvertently vandalized Barney before someone else had discovered it. I'm not sure my fragile ego could have taken a test message on my Talk page. Ted07:16, 4 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I'm going to put out a patch for this ASAP. Bear with me a couple of days, and I'll hopefully have it fixed. Thanks for all your patience! AmiDaniel (talk) 03:03, 4 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
This is STILL happening--the & problem. It is 16 June, more than a "couple of days" from June 4. You done this several times, say you'll put a patch or new feature up in a few days and not do it. I'd much prefer a more realistic time prediction on these things. Rlevse00:09, 17 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
As soon as I get to the "You have successfully logged in" page, I get an error that says
Runtime error '76':
Path not found
And VandalProof immediately exits as soon as I click OK. I did a hard refresh on my monobook.js, deleted my files in IE, and made sure I was logged in, but I still get that error.--Donbert10:36, 1 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Someone else had file access problems using a Windows account that didn't have admin rights. Have you tried running VP on an administrator account? AmiDaniel (talk) 03:02, 4 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Sounds like an incorrect install... but I thought that was fixed... What is your operating system and version of IE?Eagletalk03:02, 6 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Question: Rollback
I am having a problem with the rollback feature. If I attempt a rollback, Vandalproof will sometimes ask whether I want to reverse all changed by this particular user. So far so good. But if I then press "Yes", Vandalproof roll back to the next IP user ignoring any changes made by logged-in users in between, i.e. if I press rollback I will revert those changes as well. E.g. : The Break-Up When I wanted to revert the changes by 66.43.140.33 Vandalproof wanted to revert back to the version by 205.206.30.148, completely ignoring the cleanup by Empty2005. Travelbird 13:52, 3 June 2006 (UTC)
I should add that this problem only appears when there were multiple edits by an anonymis user, if there was only one, then rollback works fine. Travelbird13:55, 3 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Well, that's not good. I'm guessing your browser (which version of IE do you use by the way?) may be rendering the history pages strangely. I had some problems with this a while ago, but I thought I fixed it. In the next (or perhaps after-next) version, I'll have everything working with Wiki API which is a lot more consistent than screen scraping, but until then, please just try to be careful with it. Sorry about the inconvenience, but thanks for letting me know. AmiDaniel (talk) 03:01, 4 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Fixed Problem with edit summary
When I rollback any vandalism, my edit summary comes up as:
"Reverted edits by 201.247.187.82 (talk) to version 56652499&action=edit&fakeaction=autorevert&byuser=Masterjamie&o" [2]
Question: Amidaniel -- I presume that you have this fixed, but this is the 3rd or fourth occurance of the same problem. Can you give me a status report on this group of problems? Thanks —— Eagle (ask me for help) 21:45, 21 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Question: Navigate back bug
If i press Navigate back (ctrl+b) several times, so that it tries to go back further then to the first page, Vandal proof will display an error message and shut down.
You might consider changing it to doing nothing.
Anka.21310:23, 4 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Confirm, this actually does happen. AmiDaniel, I would sugest putting pending butten clicks on a stack, as to make sure that all clicks are accounted for. If this is too much work, than just make the program ignore multiple rapid clicks as suggested above.Eagletalk02:58, 6 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Whilst on IRC chatting with Tawker we updated the BL and saw a Large Removal warning pop up in the vandalism channel for both our edits - not sure what happened but I reverted the edits. Can you take a look for me please? - GlenTC(Stollery)06:57, 5 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
PS: Tawker semi-protected both pages :)
Let me look through the diffs (which take ages to load--I worry the page has gotten a bit large) and get back to you--I wonder if this may be similar to the mod list bug we had a while ago. Re: ps. I also move-protected the page, but thanks Tawker for protecting it! I'm shocked I never requested protection of it, as I figured I already had. AmiDaniel (talk) 07:05, 5 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
A Different Edit Summary Bug
Look at this edit. Notice how the equal signs do not create a new heading, but rather show up as two sets of back-to-back equal signs. On the next edit, I pressed enter between the equal sign and the HTML paragraph break, and the wiki heading showed up. Any idea why this happened? It's happening to me every time I use the {{summary}} editing hint. --Zpb5206:55, 6 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry for taking so long to respond; I've been quite baffled by this one and so have tried to find the source. Apparently the devs must have made some changes to the way the Wiki Mark-up is being rendered--previously the "==Headline Text== Body Text" construction would work just fine, but now it seems to require:
==Headline Text==
Body text
I've noticed that User:VoABot has had similar problems with this as well. I know how to fix it on my end, but it's really getting frustrating how frequently changes are being made to the MediaWiki software without anyone being told... AmiDaniel (talk) 00:27, 7 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
This is effecting me EACH TIME with the subst:preview tip. I have to manually go back and edit it to add an enter. Really embarrassing when you have to fix an edit when you're telling someone to use the preview button so they won't have to fix their edits. --mboverload@09:30, 19 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Please see this diff [3] and the history [4] -- it appears Marysunshine reverted to the last version by Sampi, but in fact, that is not what happened. -- Stbalbach19:25, 6 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I'm absolutley baffled. I have no idea what happened here. My one guess would be that Marysunshine might have some strange cookie settings whereby it loaded the edit page from cache rather than actualizing it, but it seems quite strange to me. Thanks for pointing this out. AmiDaniel (talk) 00:30, 7 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Note the edit times are exactly the same -- it' possibly an error with MediaWiki when two edits arrived at the same time. If that's the case it should be replicable (I don't run VP or I would try it). -- Stbalbach17:32, 7 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Interesting, I just came here and saw my own problem already noted! I'm having a few issues with VP at present; such as the above, a lot of error messages when I try to use the "rollback" buttons to leave warnings, etc. The only advice I can offer is that I'm running IE 6.0.2800.1106 (which is old, I think -- I use Mozilla usually...), so maybe it's just a browser issue on my end. I'll update and comment in more detail if the problems persist. --Marysunshine19:07, 12 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
You may want to try clearing out your tifs and cookies, which may be corrupt and causing a lot of your problems. Open up an instance of Internet Explorer, go to Tools / Internet Options, and click both "Delete Cookies" and "Delete Files." AmiDaniel (talk) 21:06, 15 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Every last change I inspect at the moment comes up with a green admin admin admin admin... box at the top meaning all the rollback buttons grey themselves out. I've updated my admin list to no avail so for now I'm gonna blank my admin txt file in the hope this fixes it. Any idea what's happening or if this is happening to anyone else? Thanks again matey - GlenTC(Stollery)21:00, 8 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
When updating my stats page I started getting the error "User error '438': object doesn't support this property or method. The crash does not seem to occur when updating other lists. --Phoenix Hacker23:00, 11 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
This sounds like the kind of error you would get editing a protected page, but your stats page is not protected. Let me look over that function again and see if I can replicate the bug. AmiDaniel (talk) 21:03, 15 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Today I decided to get into VP after a few weeks off. I tried to log on, but I'm getting a persistent crash whenever I get to the welcome screen. In somewhat of an ironic twist, the welcome screen (which I am unable to click) gives a link to a workaround for this problem.
I have reinstalled 4-5 times and restarted this computer.
The crash is actually resulting from popups--as you may have already noticed popups and Internet Ixplorer don't get along very well. A simple fix would be to remove popups from your monobook.js, which I couldn't live without; thus, I just put up with an occasional crash. You can also try clearing your IE tifs and cookies, which may help somewhat, or I have a little diddy I could e-mail you to disable startup rendering, which will stop the crash altogether. Note that because of this bug, I've now completely reworked the log-in method for VP 1.3 to fix it, which you can find out more about at User:AmiDaniel/VP/Upcoming release. Thanks for your patience; this bug's been around since the very beginning. AmiDaniel (talk) 21:01, 15 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Fixed Rollback bug in 1.2
When I tried to rollback a page with a "/" in the name it replaced the "/" with a " : ". This is harmless (it does not create a new page), but still very annoying. (Try Farenheit 9/11 for an example)--SomeStranger(t|c)13:41, 15 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Yep, this is one that I've fixed in 1.3, another stacking order bug in the html conversions. I'll probably put out a 1.2.2 patch sometime soon to repair this and the ampersand bug. Thanks for your patience, and sorry about the inconvenience. AmiDaniel (talk) 20:54, 15 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Fixed All contributions before rolling back
When using the normal rollback buttons at the top of the page, when it says "would you like to see all contributions by this user before rolling back", if you click OK, it shows you all of that user's contributions. When using the custom message warning box, however, the "would you like to see all contributions by this user before rolling back" dialog box still appears but if you click OK nothing happens. Also, sometimes on pages in the User: space when showing all contibutions to a page by a particular editor, and the editor before that editor was the person whose user page it is, it reverts back to the last change on the page not by the user who owns the user page, but the editor before that. For example if 000.000.000.000 edits User:Foo, and the contributions list is 000.000.000.000, 000.000.000.000, 000.000.000.000, Foo, Foo, 111.111.111.111, it will revert back to the version by 111.111.111.111 when rolling back instead of the more recent version by User:Foo. —Mets501 (talk)20:53, 15 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
The former bug I'm still working on fixing (it got reported somewhere up above, can't remember where though), and the latter is one that I've now repaired in 1.3 with the help of Yurik's query API interface. Thanks for reporting it! AmiDaniel (talk) 20:57, 15 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Reporting a page for speedy deletion recreates it
I just ran into a user using vandalproof recreating a page that I had just deleted: [5] The sequence of evens was:
Keanu2 creates page
Mr. Lefty tags page with {{unreferenced}} tag
I delete it
Alphachimp recreates it by tagging it for speedy deletion
Yeah, that's quasi an edit conflict--in the split second between when he loaded at the page and clicked {{db}}, you deleted it. I've run into this before myself, and I think I know how to prevent it in the future. Thanks for your note. AmiDaniel (talk) 20:37, 16 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
There was some change in the MediaWiki software that doesn't let titles render on the same line as text. AmiDaniel said he's going to try and find a workaround for the next release. —Mets501 (talk)17:27, 17 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
When you use the custom rollback and try to rollback an edit where the user also had the edit before it, it just stops and doesn't do anything. Always effects the Rollback (Custom) button. --mboverload@09:32, 19 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
All the articles in the watchlist listinghave a ? after them and it loads pages like this. As you can see there are two ? there, which is the source of the problem. If you remove the extra ? it works correctly. --mboverload@23:18, 19 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Having the same problem. Not sure where the extra question mark is coming from, but it's screwing up the functionality of VandalProof in several ways. -BigSmooth23:21, 19 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I'm getting it too. The devs changed yet another thing on me without any goddamn warning at all--why is it so difficult for them to just simply say "Hey, by the way, we're making changes to the watchlist!" Looking into it, and please, this is not an urgent problem. AmiDaniel (talk) 23:24, 19 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
This is ALSO happening on the RC list, the pages load and have a ?, but it shows the article pages, not the diff page. Rlevse23:26, 19 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
They stuck a ‎; after the watchlist item for some reason, an item which is not being recognized by VP, thus why it is rendering as a question mark. Fixing it, please hold your horses people. AmiDaniel (talk) 23:27, 19 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Does "" render as anything for anyone? According to the mark-up directory, it's supposed to be "left-to-right" mark; I see nothing. AmiDaniel (talk) 23:32, 19 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Alright, I've talked to Rob Church and now understand what the character does (it controls the direction of text). I'm patching this up as we speak. AmiDaniel (talk) 23:56, 19 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Can you help figure out why VP isn't appearing to do anything?
Right now I'm logged in, click "recent changes" and nothing appears. What should I try next? Thanks.
Edit: It was the "enhanced recent changes" issue. Suggestion for next version of VP: check that setting and if it's on, alert "VP is not compatible with the script used for Enhanced Recent Changes. Do you want to disable this preference so that VP will work? [yes / no]"FT2(Talk | email | contribs)09:41, 20 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
What about a warning that doesn't check preferences. Instead if nothing's loaded on updating a list, it pops up a message saying "none found, this may be because....."?
Sadly it also appears there are other things I need help to get working right.
For example, clicking an item on watchlist persistently gets a URL like this:
Please read the big yellow box on the welcome page. You need to download the patch that I just threw together this evening. That will fix your problems. AmiDaniel (talk) 10:12, 20 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Question: Buttons for user talk pages
Just letting you know that in the updated MediaWiki software titles on the same line as other text are not rendering as titles. You should probably work out a workaround for this. Also, the {{anon}} template already has a title in it, so you don't need to add another header to that. —Mets501 (talk)20:47, 21 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, I need to fix that. What happens is it tries to open "/w/index.php?title=Foobar&oldid=Oldid", and since Foobar no longer exists and Oldid no longer exists it tries to create "Foobar&oldid=Oldid". I can fix this by simply querying the page for MediaWiki:Newarticletext when posting templates, should fix it. Thanks for letting me know; someone else had a similar problem a while ago. AmiDaniel (talk) 23:34, 23 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
You need to clear your tiffs and cookies. In Internet Explorer, go to Tools / Internet Options, and click "Delete Files" and "Delete Cookies." You may also need to restart your computer. That will make the warnings go away. AmiDaniel (talk) 21:58, 26 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
That's occurring because you're missing the needed stubtypes.txt file. Open up User:AmiDaniel/VP/StubTypes, click edit, and copy and paste its contents into a file called "stubtypes.txt" in the same directory as you have VandalProof installed. AmiDaniel (talk) 22:01, 26 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I've worked it out. I was using enhanced recent changes which it couldn't handle (it is in the troubleshoot FAQ).--Konstable11:59, 4 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Question: Moderator hang
When approving two users, and welcoming them, the edits are made to the talkpages but the progress bar hangs so I have to close the window manually. However, if I do one user, three or four, it changes over to Done once they've been posted. This has been occuring for ages, but since it is so trivial to work around it, I didn't bother reporting. Also, when I rejected a user, I got User:, in my summary instead of the username - go see this diff. Thanks. —Xyrael/ 17:55, 30 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Hi, the image Green_check.png doesn't show up on the main page. I used to see a check box next to the message "You have successfully logged into VandalProof as Starionwolf."
Every now and then, I get logged out. It may be related to hibernating the PC, not sure. I won't notice unless I go and click any article I already had in my watchlist update list, and then in the top I see that I am my IP address. I assume it is MSIE "under the hood" with the problem. However, when logged out, the "Update List" button acts as if it worked, but really does nothing. I think VP should notice that the watchlist doesn't come back with my username in it anymore, and notify me in some way it is not working. here is an example.
As an aside, I see the comment changed to "...using VP" - why not VPRF since that is the 'official' shortcut?
Yes, but it does update the recent changes. By the way, I think it's a php session timeout problem and this could be fixed by having the VP software send some sort of NULL command every 5 mins or so. --Zoz(t)12:42, 10 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
The Update Log feature is not working for me. I can open the update window, I can even press the update stats and update log buttons, and after about 5 seconds a little window pops up saying 'Log Updated'. But when I got to User:Tobes00/VandalismStats or User:Tobes00/VandalismLog it says I have only reverted 5 counts of vandalism. This is because I orginally updated them after I had been using it for a while, but since that original update it appears to be broken. Enhance Recent Changes is off so that isn't the problem. And the .txt files in my VP directory all say that I have reverted 143 counts of vandalism, even the VandalismLog.txt file has 143 entries. My main browser is Firefox, but I have IE7, my operating system is Windows Vista Beta 2. If you need any more info just ask. Tobes(talk)11:53, 4 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I am using Opera with a lot of scripts that IE does not support. So when I run VandalProf, even with v1.2.2 I need to use that extra CloseScriptErr.exe to block the errors. Of course you could delete your scripts and then revert them after you've done with VP. But there is an easier way - I worked out a way to block off scripts for IE while they would still work with Opera (I think it should work with Firefox, etc, also).
var detect = navigator.userAgent.toLowerCase();
var IE;
var place = detect.indexOf('msie') + 1;
if (place) IE=true;
if (!IE) {
... your scripts go here ...
}
When I try to use VP, first it says I am not logged in. I visit the login page, login successfully, at which point I am given two runtime errors (which I do not experience when logging in directly through IE) and another error, at which point the browser section of the interface is white. If I try and visit the main WP page (Main_page), I receive the two runtime errors, have the page displayed, and immediately I receive the same third error message, at which point the browser object wipes the page and is white again. Any suggestions? I'm a fairly experienced dev so give me a complicated explanation if you have one. --Draicone(talk)07:05, 9 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Have you tried logging in plus cookie'ing your login from a normal IE window, then booting VP? It's been known to work. —Xyrael/ 20:12, 5 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I've tried that, and that lets me login at least but all the buttons are still disabled (although the captions along the top seem to have changed). Now as I write this from within VP, I get a yellow bar at the top saying 'AmiDaniel has received no vandalism warnings.' but I still don't seem to be able to do anything. I'm not getting those runtime errors (or haven't yet at least, I'm yet to recreate a situation in which I know I used to get them) so I may try restarting VP, trying a combination of IE settings etc. --Draicone(talk)07:05, 9 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
What version are you using? v1.2.2 is the most current, although 1.3.0 will be released shortly. That may fix this for you. AmiDaniel (talk) 22:24, 14 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I'm definitely using 1.2.2. However, now I have reason to believe my IE engine is broken and I'm installing SP2 so that I can try to use IE7 Beta 3 and see if this fixes the problem. Don't worry about this for now. Thanks for your help. --Draicone(talk)12:07, 21 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I won't be installing SP2 for a while, so I may stick to Lupin's anti vandal tool for now. Thankyou for your assistance with this issue. --Draicone(talk)07:56, 26 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
It lets me log in and updates, but whenever I click on an edit it goes to the page without showing the diff and says "Admin has not recieved any warnings" on the top... savidan(talk)(e@)22:54, 5 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Using VP 1.2.2, VP doesn't seem to be picking up the bot flag in the RC feed (which is a bold "b" before the page name, just like the m for minor and N for new pages). It listed the page as "b Pagename" and clicking the edit takes you to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/b_Pagename?diff=cur&oldid=prev (which obviously won't exist). It's no biggie since there's nto really any need to check bot edits anyway, but it's a bug (for me) none-the-less. :) --james// bornhj (talk)15:25, 6 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I presume due to the simplicity of this bug that it is fixed in future versions. If it is not, let me know, and or change the status in the title. —— Eagle (ask me for help) 17:25, 22 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Question: VandalismLog
When I click on the button to update my VandalismLog file, it says it's updated, but the file doesn't actually change. The VandalismStats file does get updated when I do that button. Rlevse02:14, 7 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
AmiDaniel is the only one with access to the source code, and would be the only one who could answer this. Unfortunatly, he is currently on break, so you may have to wait a while. :-( Sorry! Prodegotalk23:48, 7 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
The only work around I found is to copy the text from the file on your hard drive into your wiki VandalismLog. What upsets me the most is that more and more we don't even get a response to our bug reports, we are just left dangling.Rlevse18:08, 22 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Question: New VP User with problem
I've now got vandal proof 1.2.2, thank you, which says welcome and shows 1.2.2 and my name at the top left, but it keeps telling me I can't use that version and to upload a newer one? (NB: I start VP then login within the page shown). However before I can do anything it switches to the User page. but repeats the newer version warning. All the tabs above are inactive. I have just gone into it for the first time when the tabs were active and it actually came up and did something? I pressed update and it showed a list of items in the top left box, one of which was this:-
I clicked on the item within that box and a heavily vandalised talk / history page flashed up and in the space bar above a yellow bar with the wording no Admin warnings have been given, or something like that, quickly flashed on and off. Then the whole page / programme locked up. Is it prone to do things like that or am I doing something wrong? I use Firefox. Richard Harvey08:35, 8 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Question: rollingback duplication
I have twice done a rollback only to find the system flash up that I was editing a prior version. Each case was due to having another editor spot and roll back the same edit as I, virtually at the same time. Is it not possible to have the system spot the revert message from the first rollback and abort the second, until visual confirmation confirms the edit needs to be reverted? This will save some embarrassing cleaning up of each others talk pages. Richard Harvey18:21, 9 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I was trying to tag the article Cavanagh Farrell with {{db-repost}} which was a recreated redirect. After clicking back from the target article to get back to Cavanagh Farrell, I tagged the article using VP and it tagged Cavanagh Farrell&redirect=no instead. Can VP ignore this text? Question: Persistent AIV Bug and Welcome Anon Issue
Let me preface this (as I do with everything I post on this page), by saying that VP is awesome. I have over 1100 vandalism reverts with this version alone.
I've been having tons of trouble with reporting people to WP:AIV. I saw this bug referenced above, but it's still sort of a problem. Today I even accidentally reported myself, which was a little bit embarrassing. I've found that if I activate the report to AIV warning from any page other than a user's contribs, it will probably end up on his userpage, not the AIV page. AIV warnings are also posting without an edit summary.
I've also had a lot of trouble with the welcome anonymous user function. Check out this. That's exactly how all of my anon welcomes have appeared since 1.2. I would change the template, but it's locked to anyone but admins.
The following were checked with 1.2.2 open alongside as a comparision:
When displaying last edit of a page 1.3 seems to show the editor on the left in the colored bar above rather than the right. This means if he/she is an admin VP wont revert
Rollback all function is always greyed out
For some reason my watchlist takes aggggeeesss' to load
When using RSS Feed for Recent Changes often the same edits are listed repeatedly causing a significant lag behind realtime edits
When you're viewing a diff, or when you're viewing an RC item? And there's nothing prohibiting reverting admins that I'm aware of. I find this bug quite odd, and I think I must be misunderstanding something.
I reworked Rollback All to use bot rollback, which is available to admins only, and there were many concerns raised about the risk of making Rollback All available to non-admins. However, after some discussion with User:ShaunES, I've agreed to put the non-admin rollback all back in in the actual 1.3 release.
Maybe because you have a lot of items on your watchlist? =P Let me take a look at it, and see if I may have screwed something up.
Yes, I'm aware, and I'm not sure how to fix it. The RSS feed has a lot of problems with browser caching, whereby it sometimes will need to be loaded twice before it is actually up to date. Typically as long as you engage in other activity, i.e. looking at and reviewing edits in between loads, it will clear your cache such that the feed will be loaded real-time. I've been trying to find a way to fix this, but have had no luck, which is much the reason that the 1.3 release has been so delayed.
Yes when viewing an edit from the RC list, if an admin was the 2nd to last editor, their name would be listed on top and buttons grey out when that occurs. However I will try this on another PC as you know probs I've had...
That explains it :) Can I have a beta with the function restored?? ;)
Yes but 1.2.2 loads it NP
Righto - sorry to hear. How does the AWB and VF do it?
When warning a user, if their talk page is already open (for editing) then VP actually creates another page with the &action=edit on the end (eg [[User talk:xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx&action=edit]])
I do not know but I assume the above may occur when tagging open articles for speedy delete also.
(header formerly 'VP fails to log me in')
When loading VP, while logged in under IE6 and it appearing so in the top right hand corner, I am taken to a page which temporarily has: $$LOGINMESSAGE$$ DONOTALLOW V1_0_0. I have my VP clearance, I am logged in correctly, it does the same when logged in under another account that does not have VP clearance (User:DraiconeBot, I happened to be logged in with it under IE to test AWB) yet it fails the identity check. Is there a workaround, a previous fix that I've missed or something? --Draicone(talk)08:32, 8 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Somehow, by clicking places and logging out/in again, I've got into VP. However, now my RC Feed refuses to load. I have the latest version of VP, I've managed to test it by rv'ing an edit I found under Lupin's Anti Vandal tool and everything is fine, yet my RC feed in the left pane is always blank, even if i set it to auto update or update it manually. Any suggestions? --Draicone(talk)08:51, 8 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I can't login at all even though I'm logged in and have VandalProof clearance. I have tryed on 3 computers (Windows Vista, Windows XP Home and XP Pro) since i thought it maybe something to do with my computer.— Preceding unsigned comment added by Robertmyers (talk • contribs)
Similar to the "Custom rollback can't go back" reports above, with 1.3, when I hit "rollback" (regular rollback) when an editor has made 2 or more edits in a row, I first get the normal "the previous edit was by the same user..." prompt. Upon hitting "yes" I hear a couple "IE clicks" like it's changing page, but nothing happens - I'm still left looking at the current edit compared to the edit immediately preceding (same user). --AbsolutDan(talk)04:25, 9 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
When I warn a user the links don't come out correctly. I have to manually make a second edit to fix the links. here is an example. linkSirGrant21:31, 9 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
