John Orman is a politics professor at Fairfield Universityin Fairfield, Connecticut. He was the 1984 Democratic Party nominee for the U.S. Congress seat in Connecticut's fourth district, and briefly challenged Senator Joseph Lieberman for the 2006 Democratic Senate nomination.

Challenging Joe Lieberman

In March of 2005, Orman announced that he would challenge Senator Lieberman for the Democratic nomination because of what he said Lieberman was acting in a way that was disloyal to the party and was a supporter of the failed foriegn policy of President George W. Bush.

Orman's campaign generated support from bloggers across the country, but for a variety of reasons, he was never considered a serious threat to Lieberman. In September of 2005, he announced he was withdrawing from the race because of a lack of money.

Orman's campaign never generated much momentum, but it is touted by pundits as a prelude to the campaign of businessman Ned Lamont, who shocked the political world by coming upsetting Lieberman in the primary and winning the party's nomination for the Senate seat.

When Lamont, who won 52 percent of the vote on August 8, 2006 to become the Democratic nominee, came to Fairfield University in the spring of 2006, he told those in attendence that he was "picking up where John Orman left off."
