Yarralumla, Australian Capital Territory
Yarralumla (postcode: 2600) is an inner suburb of Canberra, Australian Capital Territory, Australia. Yarralumla follows much of the southern bank of Lake Burley Griffin, and is one of Canberra's most expensive suburbs.
Yarralumla is named after the Yarralumla property that included the area before the construction of Canberra. The Yarralumla property homestead is now Government House and is the official residence of the Governor-General of Australia.
Initially Yarralumla (like most of early Canberra) was entirely government built housing. Being on the other side of the Molonglo River from the city center it was considered too far out of town by most public servants, and it was mainly settled by blue collar workers, many working at the nearby brickworks and nursery. Far into the the 1960s and 70s Yarralumla was viewed as a lower class suburb. During the 1980s house prices began to rise leading to a rejuvenation of the suburb. Large numbers of the original government monocrete and weatherboard houses have been demolished for the constuction of large new houses, and the suburb is now amongst the most desirable in Canberra.
The Yarralumla brickworks was one of the earliest constuction projects in Canberra. It produced the bricks used to build many of Canberra's buildings until it's closure in 1942. Narrow gauge railway lines for the transportation of bricks linked Yarralumla to some of the major building sites in central Canberra such as Old Parliament House, and the Kingston Power House.
Yarralumla is home to many of Canberra's foreign embassies and high commissions, many built in the traditional style of thier home country. Other notable places in Yarralumla are the Hotel Canberra, now the Hyatt Hotel Canberra, Albert Hall, The Royal Canberra Golf Club, Weston Park & Yarralumla Nursery and many other parks and gardens along the southern shore of Lake Burley Griffin.
