GSK-3
Appearance
Glutamine Synthase Kinase 3 is a serine/threonine protein kinase. In mammals it is encoded by two known genes GSK-3 Alpha and Beta. GSK-3 is known for phosphorylates glycogen synthase inactivating it and has been implicated in the control of cellular response to damaged DNA. GSK-3 homolog in Drosophila is known as Shaggy(Zeste White 3). In Drosophila and Xenopus GSK-3 works in the Wnt signalling pathway to phosphorylate beta-catenin so it is degraded by cellular proteases to prevent it from entering a nucleus to activate transcription factors. This is prevented by Axin binding to beta-catenin to prevent phosphorylation.
