Mew (ミュウ Myū) is a Psychic-type Pokémon that was discovered at the beginning of Pokémon Red, Blue, Green, and Yellow in the Amazon Rainforest, according to a scientists' journals in Cinnabar Mansion.

Since this Pokémon was so rare, scientists attempted to clone it but the experiment went wrong and resulted in the creation of Mewtwo. According to the diaries on Cinnabar, Mew wound up somehow giving birth to Mewtwo.

Name Origin

Mew's concept is supposedly based off a house cat. The word mew referrs to a sound made by a small feline.

Pokédex descriptions

  • Red/Blue Pokédex description: So rare that it is still said to be a mirage by many experts. Only a few people have seen it worldwide!
  • Yellow Pokédex description: When viewed through a microscope, this Pokémon's short, fine, delicate hair is seen.
  • Gold Pokédex description: Apparently, it appears only to those people who are pure of heart and have a strong desire to see it.
  • Silver Pokédex description: Its DNA is said to contain the genetic codes of all Pokémon, so it can use all kinds of techniques.
  • Crystal Pokédex description: Because it can learn any move, some people began research to see if it is the ancestor of all Pokémon.

Capturing Mew

In the games, this Pokémon is nearly impossible to get (as is noted here). Becuase of this, many players turn to cheating devices such as a Gameshark in order to own this rare and powerful Pokémon.

The only official means of capturing Mew is recieving one from Nintendo personnel at special events called Pokéconventions where they are handed out to the trainers that come.

In Pokémon Emerald, Mew can be caught on a new island called World's Edge Island. To get there, the player needs a special ticket from Nintendo. Then, the Mew must be chased around the island until it is cornered, at which point it will fight. It is at level 30.

Mew can be captured in Pokémon Red, Blue, and Yellow using the "Mew glitch", which is detailed in a guide on the GameFAQs Pokémon Blue FAQ page. There is currently no known way to catch Mew without using this glitch or a Gameshark.

Due to Mew's rarity, it is likely one of the most often "cloned", or duplicated, Pokémon, particularly if the person doing the cloning cannot obtain another Mew through any other means.
