Curelom and cumom
Appearance
A cumon is apparently an animal, and apparently extinct, the only mention of which is in the Book of Mormon:
- Ether 9:19 - And they also had horses, and asses, and there were elephants and cureloms and cumoms; all of which were useful unto man, and more especially the elephants and cureloms and cumoms.
Joseph Smith was given no English equivalent for the Nephite word when he was inspired to translate the passage from Reformed Egyptian. Some modern Mormons speculate that it might refer to mastodons, mammoths, or perhaps another Central American animal species, such as tapirs or jaguars.
