To anyone recieving this message: Wikipedia apologizes as a whole, if you are receiving this message. It seems that the IP address 64.12.117.7 is very dynamic. Not only does is it used by you, and people in the same area as you, it is used worldwide, as listed below. This is a true oddity for Wikipedia, and for the Internet.

Please, don't be discouraged or confused, if we seem to be calling you a vandal. This comment is meant for other Internet users with this dynamic IP address.

As well as reading, and possibly contributing information to Wikipedia, we ask that you sign in where you are from, at the date that you visited, so that we can keep a record of this oddity.

Just a ploy to get you to sign up

Don't get me wrong I think this is a great site, fantastic really put the whole IP address thing just doesn't work for me. At the bottom of the page you can see the message that states you may get this message if you share an IP address with someone. I don;t think it is based on IP address but maybe a bit wider like geographic areas. I am in Vancouver, BC like most. I am on ADSL and know that my IP address has never been the one displayed above.. They are just grouping us together to get us to sign up or to use the wikipedia like I just did. Looks like it worked :)

I just got this message but my current IP (I use dynamic IP) doesn't match any of the ones on the page?! I can understand why persons with the same ISP can get each other messages because they may get the same IP now and then but how can this happen to people in other countries using totally different ISPs????

Eh? You sure this isn't just a non fixed IP that goes to different people at different times?

Don't vandalize wikipedia. RickK 21:54, Aug 29, 2004 (UTC)

Hello from Vancouver, Canada

Once again, I got this "You have a message" thing, and I have no idea what for. Yay!

I didn't! (Ref: NL Wiki- I'm JACK there)

MAKES NO SENSE, STUPID MESSAGE TO AN IP I'M NOT USING. IT IS AN AOL PROXY, I'M NOT EVEN USING AOL!

Don't know how to make a new entry as an anonymous user so I'm editing this one.

Calgary, Canada here.

Could this be a problem with our browsers or OS?

MyIE2 (Maxthon) and WinXP here.

me neither

please post the vandalised article, in case we changed something but didn't think of it as vandalism. I didn't change anything, but just for next time... if you look at this again.

Your really shouldn't bombard...

These IP based user talks, because this IP is in Comcast's dynamic range and changes weekly. Right now being used by an editor with quite a few edits.

This IP is also used by BlueYonder, a UK internet provider. I should point out that first time users arriving to Wikipedia with this IP address are greeted with "Don't Vandalise Wikipedia" as their first new message...

me too

Hey, I've got this dynamic IP from my dialup service provider in Moscow! 212.46.245.254 17:13, 24 Oct 2004 (UTC)

Globetrotter!

I got this IP from the IAS in Princeton (I'm gadykozma when I'm logged in). 192.16.204.80 18:53, 24 Oct 2004 (UTC)

Stop This Silliness

IP based warnings are just exasperating. I just got this warning and this is NOT even my IP address. How manay people have static IP addresses anyway? And dialup users (the vast majority), almost always have a different IP each time they connect. Proxy servers are everywhere...they hide your real IP.

Heya!

Hello from Canada! Look, this IP address is internationally renowned!

Greetings from Urbana, IL

This IP address certainly seems to get around. We should form an association or an orkut community or something.

I'm in St. Andrews, Scotland. This IP is a university one and as such I have no idea why it would have so many users given my provider has a set band for uni purposes.

Here too...

It's here in Winnipeg, Canada too.

Hello form Cardiff, Wales, UK

I also get these messages for this I.P. address, it would appear to be all over the planet. I use NTL cable.

Another Toronto user

Well, actually, Brampton, a part of the Greater Toronto Area. So, um... Hey from Canada, again?

Netherlands

Hi, i'm using this IP-adress from the town of Werkendam in the Netherlands.

n00b from Australia

I'm from the excrement hole known as Murray Bridge in South Australia... why the fuck was this new message sent to me of all people... so yeah... heaps... ...uhuhuhuhuhuhuh! 64.12.117.7?

Basel/Switzerland

hm, not sure whether this is my IP address... I'd have to look it up... my IP address should be the same as unibas.ch

Many students, lecturers and professors use this address, although this may change soon (new contracts with provider). 12:40, 30 Oct 2004 (UTC) - wathiik

Lisbon, Portugal

Sorry, but it's not my IP!

Um, maybe Wikipedia's IP detection is messed up.. I've definitely had an IP of 4.xxx.xxx.xxx for over two years now. Whaaatevaaaah

Not my IP either

Hello from Serbia and Montenegro. This is not my IP either, it belongs to proxy.aol.com. Needless to say, I have no association with AOL.
