Detroit Demolition
The Detroit Demolition are a women's semi-professional American football team based in the Detroit area. They joined the National Women's Football Association (NWFA) in 2002 as the Detroit Danger, winning a league championship. Their only loss that year was to the Cleveland Fusion, in what's described as a controversial affair that took two weekends to complete. Delayed for an hour and a half at halftime during a thunderstorm, officials allowed play to begin, but called a halt a second time when lightning was sighted in the distance. The NWFA (at the time)league office decided to reschedule the game the following weekend (a bye week for both teams). The NWFA/NWFL now has a policy that allows officials to end the game due to bad weather, with the winner decided by the scoreboard when a game is called officially. If that were used in this case the Detroit would have been declared the winner at half time.
After an ownership change, and a name change to the Detroit Demolition, the team won three more league titles, going undefeated in each of those three seasons. The Demolition sought membership into the Independent Women's Football League (IWFL) in 2006. It was subsequently accepted in the league. The Demolition is the second IWFL team in Detroit, the other being the Detroit Predators. The Demolition played at Detroit Redford High School and Livonia Churchill High in 2006. Detroit was upset in the IWFL championship game 21-14 by the Atlanta Xplosion 21-14. It was only the Demolition's second loss in the franchise's five-year history.
Also in 2005, the team played a special Mother's Day game at Ford Field, home of the Detroit Lions.
