Pharmacia was originally a state owned Swedish pharmaceutical company. Sold to private interests in the 1990ies, it was bought by the American bioindustry and medical company Monsanto. The resulting conglomerate took the name of Pharmacia Inc.

In July 2002, Pfizer placed a bid on Pharmacia.
