The plain statement of 'where' Salford is is Greater Manchester - look at the entry for Salford for confirmation of that. You could gloss Lancashire as the historical/traditional county, but that's not really relevant to the opening paragraph, nor really to the article on the Cathedral, rather than the article on Salford itself.
