Although homosexuality was only fully legalised in Romania in 2001, the country's presidential candidate, Traian Băsescu announced that he would legalise same-sex marriages if he is elected. The ruling PSD opposes this idea. However, if Basescu and his National Liberal Party-Democrat Party coalition is elected, Romania could well be the first country in Central and Eastern Europe to legalise same-sex marriages.
