Wikipedia:Article Collaboration and Improvement Drive

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
This is an old revision of this page, as edited by Rossnixon (talk | contribs) at 02:10, 24 August 2006 (Embryology (3 votes, stays until August 30): update dumb counter). The present address (URL) is a permanent link to this revision, which may differ significantly from the current revision.

NOTE: To those wondering what is going on - the AID and the COTW have been merged to create one large drive that overhauls all classes of articles. The voting rules remain the same as for AID.

The Article Creation and Improvement Drive is a weekly collaboration to improve all articles to featured article status.

/History - For past winners.
/Removed - For removed nominations.
/Maintenance - ARCAID upkeep.

Introduction

To vote or nominate you have to be a registered user with at least one contribution that is not a vote. Any and all articles may be nominated except:

If you wish to help with maintenance of Article Improvement Drive (updating vote counts and such), please see this page: /Maintenance.

User AID unfolds to

This user participated in the Article Creation and Improvement Drive.

How to nominate

Here is the template for nominations:

ARTICLE (1 vote, stays until DATE ONE WEEK LATER)
:Nominated MONTH DAY, YEAR; needs at least 4 votes by DATE ONE WEEK LATER, YEAR

; Support:
# (sign with four tildes)

; Comments:
* (put your reason for nomination, sign again)

----
 1. Copy and paste the template to the bottom of the list of nominations on this page and fill it out. It is important to use UTC time; the current time and date now is 10:16, Monday, June 2, 2025 (UTC).
 2. Under "comments" section put explanation of what work is needed.
 3. After submitting the new nomination, go to the nominated article and put AIDnomto do on the top of the article's talk page.

How to vote

Sign with "# ~~~~" on the end of the list of the article you want to vote for and then update the vote count in the subhead. Opposing votes are not counted; see approval voting. You can vote for as many articles as you like. If, after you vote, the vote count equals the "needs at least xx votes by", then add 4 to "needs at least xx votes" and add a week to date in vote count and "needs at least xx votes by" notice.

Example. You encounter this situation and decide to vote:

History of the world (23 votes, stays until February 7, 2006)
:Nominated December 8, 2005; needs at least 24 votes by February 7, 2006

First you put "# ~~~~" on the end of the list of people who voted for that article and then change the vote count and date in following manner:

History of the world (24 votes, stays until February 14, 2006)
:Nominated December 8, 2005; needs at least 28 votes by February 14, 2006

How the article is selected

Article with most votes on each Sunday in 00:00 GMT is selected as "The current Article Improvement Drive article". If two articles have same number of votes, the older nominee wins.

The next project article is to be selected on Sunday, August 27, 2006. 00:00 GMT (Template:DAYSTOSUNDAY)

How an article is removed from the list

Articles need four votes per week to stay on the list. If current date (June 2 2025) exceeds "stays until" date of particular article, that article entry is removed from this page and moved to page for removed nominations.

Nominations

George Washington (29 votes, stays until August 31)

Nominated July 6, 2006; needs at least 32 votes by August 31, 2006

I note also that User:Spirou's account was created thirty minutes before voting here, User:DeVandalizer's account was created two days before voting here, and User:Tagenar's account was created two days before voting here. All three users have less than ten edits. I consider this an abuse of the AID nominations process. --Ideogram 03:46, 24 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I emailed Uzza myself when he voted suggesting that he consider making other edits on Wikipedia, but I got no reply. Since it's been a week, I would agree with removing his vote on that basis, as he appears to be foreign and will probably contribute to his own language Wikipedia if any.
The other three you mention are long-term members of WikiFur who have been encouraged to improve the furry fandom article for the reasons I specified below. WikiFur's sitenotice (for registered users only) contained a notice encouraging "Wikipedia editors" to help out, and a longer message (again, encouraging existing editors of Wikipedia to take part in the drive) was posted on the WikiFur LiveJournal. Many editors of WikiFur are also long-time editors of Wikipedia, so I don't see what was unreasonable about that - it's faster and less spammier than leaving a message on the talk page of every person in Category:Furry Wikipedians, which I did consider. Indeed, User:Pifactorial said they were about to make the same LiveJournal post.
If you want to discount the three voters mentioned because they're new, then the criteria for removing articles need to be changed to specifically say that new editors are not welcome to participate. My view is that, although it was not the intended result, Wikipedia just gained three new editors as a result of this entry. Spirou and DeVandalizer in particular have made significant contributions (500+ edits each) on WikiFur; I suspect they will become similarly active on Wikipedia over time, as Xydexx has. GreenReaper 04:50, 24 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for the explanation. I certainly can't change the AID voting policy by myself, but I did want to note that the sudden burst of votes looked suspicious. If the new editors do move on to become significant contributors I am all for it. --Ideogram 04:52, 24 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
You're welcome. I suspected we would get a good response from the postings - furries are enthusiastic people! WikiFur's reached 4,400 articles in just a year powered by the same enthusiasm (hmm, maybe we can call ourselves the The 4400 now? :-), and it seems like it would be a good idea to try and encourage editors who have "trained up" on wiki editing to come over to "the big wiki". We do our best to send over regular visitors, too - most articles that have an equivalent over here will link to it. GreenReaper 05:08, 24 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Since voting on this AID, DeVandalize has made no contributions, and Spirou has made one (adding an IMDB link for an obscure article) along with a vote on an AfD. They may be active on Wikifur, but this isn't Wikifur and they haven't been active at all here. --Chad Hennings 23:38, 6 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry about the long absence after voting. I have been working on WikiFur's Fursuit Central project and the wikisharp library for an anti-vandalism bot for wikifur. This has caused me to be absent from wikipedia for a while under User:DeVandalizer. I am a long term contributor but unfortunatly most of my conributions are anonymous or are under nat ip's (Northwest Missouri State University). I am working on contributing to wikipedia to build up a reputation here but please don't discount me on this vote. I appologize for the sock puppet like behavior. -- DeVandalizer 05:46, 11 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
If possible, I would like to cast my vote anew, as I've tried to contribute and chime in on the discussions where I feel that I could do that. I'll also try to continue to give my oppinion on subjects if it's needed and if I can add to the current discussions. Uzza 21:15, 16 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I don't see a problem with that - heck, your subsequent contributions were deletion-related, you should fit in just fine here at Wikipedia. ;-p GreenReaper 21:56, 16 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I tried coming up with a good way of saying that my vote could be counted again, but my wiki markup knowledge is pretty basic so I don't know if I could do it the way I thought. So at the moment I just removed the info on my old vote. And I always seem to forget to sign... Uzza 07:58, 17 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

This is currently a high class B article, verging on good article status in the culture and society section. I think it with a bit more general polishing from experienced Wikipedians it could easily achieve this status, and I would hope that it could reach class A, or beyond. As google's first hit for the term "furry fandom", it is the place where a lot of people will go to find information about the fandom, and I think it is important that it be the best it can be. GreenReaper 20:31, 15 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The article already links to the furry Wiki. Although the votes in support of this article are probably well-intentioned, I think a lot of regular contributors to the AID are unable to relate to the furry concept (that's certainly true for me although I can't say I've contributed much in the AID lately). As an encyclopedia, focusing too much on things like this - and I did not say the word fancruft! :P - is where WP:BIAS comes from. But hey, every dog (pun intended) deserves his day I suppose. Moulder 15:07, 31 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I thought bias was about covering topics in an improper manner, or failing to cover those that "do matter"? AID does not seem to be about that, seeing as it improves existing articles that are beyond the stub phase - it seems more like Collaboration of the Week territory.
WikiFur is a good wiki, but I would hesitate to call it totally unbiased; just redirecting people there for a comprehensive overview isn't a good solution. After all, its own motto is "by furries, for furries, about furries". While it may take some of the pressure off furry article creation/deletion, that just means that those that remain here need to be of a higher standard. It is certainly not a replacement for a good article here, and I think that such an article cannot be provided solely by members of the fandom - or by the combination of the fandom and its detractors.
If nothing else, AID contributors could highlight points which are unfamiliar to them and which need more explanation or referencing. Being "unable to relate" seems to be a sign of that - is there a sticking point in understanding? GreenReaper 20:46, 2 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Bias also encompasses covering things out of proportion to their importance. All I meant about being unable to relate, really, is that users are more likely to contribute to an article that interests them or with which they have experience. I've no room to talk, having nominated Star Trek: Deep Space Nine for GA COTW, but AID was historically for the most encyclopedic (math, sciences, english, history etc) topics which is partly why it came to hold more prominence in people's minds than other COTWs. I didn't mean to pick on the furries, because manga and such are in the same category, particularly when people vote because they're told to, but as I said, I'm not implying these topics aren't "worthy" of AID. It's just my opinion. Moulder 21:34, 7 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

 • This is a good article so far; however, it needs more attention. It could use more sources, copyediting, and a general cleanup.
 • Yes. It's past time that we make this a Featured Article; amazing that this one would receive so little attention while Rosa Parks has already been an FA for months. -Silence 22:43, 24 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

 • One of the main phases of matter, one of the most important concepts in chemistry, and yet there's no sections to speak of, and only one source. Needs both more layman translations and more technical detail; needs practical applications; needs history of science. --M@rēino 18:37, 16 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

 • With the launch of My Network TV in the U.S. this fall, this Latin American art form is invading The U.S. and Europe. It will doubtlessly get many hits over the next year or so. The current article needs an overhaul.

 • This is a very important subfield of biology yet all we have is a stub. While the Evolution page has endless debates over whether creationism should be included, debates that go nowhere but consume many many hours of time by several editors (some quite capable), here is an important scientific topic practically abandoned. Lexor suggested merging it with another article - I have no objection and leave this decision to biologists. But whether merged or kept, I think this is th perfect example of a scientific topic that deserves attention and care to help make this a great encyclopedia.

In fact, if anyone actually knows an embryologist, please encourage them to contribute!
