Virton: St Lawrence's church

Virton is the most southerly town in Belgium and the administrative centre of a municipality (commune) and district (arrondissement) of the same name, located in the Belgian province of Luxembourg.

On 1 January 2006 the municipality had 11,165 inhabitants. The total area is 94.49 km², giving a population density of 118 inhabitants per km². Virton is the principal town of the small region of Belgian Lorraine known as the Gaume, famous for its microclimate.

It was also the home of many Canadian families whose fathers/husbands were stationed nearby at RCAF Stn. No. 1 (F) Wing Marville France. Virton, Florenville and many villages in the area hosted Canadian families for many years. Prior to moving the base to Lahr Germany, there were ceremonies in both these towns and Longuyon (Permanent Married Quarters) in France where Canadians left three small 'thunderbird' totems. They are still there and were re-dedicated in September 2005 on the 50th anniversary of the opening of the base.
