Introduction

This is a fun and simple game. It's in the Sandbox - feel free to join in! It's a good place to practice making links to articles, and to start looking for interesting articles on Wikipedia.

How to Play

By way of example, a game might start off with: cat. Then, the next person might add cat, dog. And after a few more rounds, we might get cat, dog, pet, animal, forest, tree, ...

Simply, the game involves adding a single word to the list that is related to the previous one. Avoid repeating words, and keep the links tasteful! Please use only blue links when associating. Piped links are acceptable in certain circumstances, such as [[Queen (band)|Queen]]. Clearly, as the game develops, one gets a pretty long list! If you're stuck for ideas, link to the last word in the list and add the first link that appears on that page as the next link. Thus Sebastian Junger would be followed by 1962, and Latin by ancient.

Try to update the word count each time you add a word. The official limit for the main game is 400 words.

Occasionally, it's good to have some branches that diverge the main game into several sections. The official limit for said branches is 80 words. Try not to make a branch when the main game is about to close down; that will only store your branch away in the archives. Please only branch when the word exists in the word list.

In spirit of the game, please only type one word consecutively. Then, another person can respond to your word, and the game continues!

The Game

We are now on Game #12!

Other Games

Archive of old games

Normal

(normal games are played out one word after another, with occasional splitting branches.)

Lasted until we had about 400 words on the list, and a bunch of repeated ones.
Our first attempt at word disassociation. Creativity was somewhat lower.
Our third word association game. Lasted until there were around 849 words on the list, including four "branches".
Our fourth word association game. Was limited to 400 words in the main branch, but several branches arose, including two invisible branches.
The fifth word association game.
The sixth word association game, with 400 words in the main branch and 5 other branches totaling another 510 words.
  • Game #7 ("Tram""Tom Bombadil")
The seventh word association game.
  • Game #8 ("NIMBY""Crystal Cave")

Ultra

(Ultra games are played out on a 7x15 table, associating from the upper left to the bottom right)

The first Ultra Association game on a 7x15 grid.
Second Ultra-Association game, random seed on 7x15. The game only got to 7x14 when it ended.
Third Ultra-Association game, random seed on 7x15.
Fourth Ultra-Association game, random seed on 7x15.
Fifth Ultra-Association game, random seed on 7x15.
Sixth Ultra-Association game, random seed on 7x15.

  • Radial Ultra Cross #1 ("One""Word surfing champion", "Percussion", "War Pigs" and "Human evolution")
The first game of Radial Ultra Cross Association. The start letters were: "W O R D A S S O C I A T I O N" (vertical) and "C R O S S" (horizontal, centred on the 'O' of 'association')
The second game of Radial Ultra Cross Association. The start letters were "EMERALD", "RINGS" across and "PEARLANDDIAMOND" down.

War and heavy metal

Psychadelic

(Psychadelic games feature unusual ultra ideas. Games 1 to 6 were started by Xhin. Thryduulf has started the games from number 7 onwards)

The first game of Psychadelic Word Association; featured ten words in random places.
Featured four unknown words that had to be guessed at.
In possibly the best effort of word associationists, you had to play the game like psychadelic #1, except all of the first letters are fixed, some of them t, e, a, e, or s. There were only three letters remaining at the end. Well done.
In this edition, you had to Expand out the entire table from one word, reaching all four corners of an 8x8 grid.
In this flavor, you had to-- Well, why don't you read the instructions for yourself?
Your run of the mill radial word association, with one exception...
A remake of game #1, this time the words were the names of islands and the word "island" was prohibited.
A development on the 10 islands idea, except the starting words were placed in a diamond pattern around the board.

Misc

(An archive of different game concepts that haven't had four in a series yet.)

  • Enigmatic #1 (Scratching post, Garfield:The movie, pink panther, Dowsing rod, the internet movie database.)
The first game of Enigmatic. Was like a condensed version of psychadelic #2.
  • Enigmatic #2 (Tuxedo, Channel, Teenage Mutant Ninja Tutles, Dominoes, Microwave)
Like the first Enigmatic game, although this took a little longer.
Like the normal assocation games, but with words not associated with the previous one.
Like the Ultra Fixed association games, but the words don't associate with each other.
Same as last time but with different disassociations.
Same as last two times but with different disassociations.
Associate with a spiral of disassociated words.
Each player adds one word, and selects location of next move, and whether to associate or disassociate.
Based on the film Sliding Doors, this was two games of radial ultra in one. This game inspired the other Sliding Doors associations.
WA with a purpose?!
