Routing Information Protocol. The most commonly used interior gateway protocol in the Internet. RIP is a distance-vector routing protocol which employs hop count as a routing metric. The maximum number of hops allowed with RIP is 15. RIP updates every 30 seconds, generating lots of network traffic. There are two common versions of RIP, namely RIPv1 and RIPv2. RIPv1 is only capable of classful routing whereas RIPv2 uses VLSM (Variable Length Subnet Masks).

Critics of the act say it is a gross invasion of privacy which will destroy e-commerce in Britain, but the government argues it is necessary to crack down on internet crime and paedophilia.
