Brossard is a city in southwestern Quebec, Canada on the south shore of Montreal. It is bordered by the St. Lawrence River to the west and by the Saint-Jacques River to the south. It is surrounded by 5 municipalities on the South Shore of Montreal: Saint-Lambert, Greenfield Park, Saint Hubert, Carignan and La Prairie.

Brossard is a residential city (with some 14-floor residential towers) with large commercial zones (Taschereau Boulevard, the Champlain Mall, Panama Avenue, LaPiniere Blvd) and an industrial zone.

History

The city of Brossard was founded on February 14, 1958 and was known before then as « Municipalité de la Paroisse de La Prairie de la Magdeleine ». Later, the territory of Brossard was increased twice: a portion of land #121 from Greenfield Park was added on August 8, 1964. Furthermore, Notre-Dame-de-Sacre-Coeur merged into Brossard on March 25, 1978 to form the current city.

Brossard was merged into the city of Longueuil in 2002, but voted for demerger in the municipal referendum that took place in June 2004 where the biggest demerger ever recorded, headed by Gilles Larin and Pierre Senécal, was scored. On January 1, 2006, Brossard demerged officially and Jean Marc Pelletier became the new mayor.
