Water Margin
Water Margin or Outlaws of the Marsh (水浒传, Shuǐhǔ Zhuàn) is one of the most famous works of classical Chinese literature. Attributed to Shi Nai'an and Luo Guanzhong, the novel details the trials and tribulations of one hundred and eight outlaws during the early 12th century.
The setting of these legendary stories is Song Dynasty China. Brave men and women were forced into the marshes of Liangshan by corrupt leaders. They gradually grow into an army of outlaws led by 108 heroes. The highest leader is Song Jiang.
There are many versions of the novel and many spin-offs of the novel. Note that many so-called "spin-offs" may indeed appear before the novel appeared in its final form.
The Water Margin was a successful Japanese television adaptation of the story, which was sold to many other countries. The novel also inspired the popular RPG video game series Gensou Suikoden.
