Videoland is also sales agent for the Pi-li Channel and the Discovery Channel.Videoland's operations include an Engineering Division, a Programming Division and an Advertising Division as well as an Advertising Sales Division which is responsible for advertising sales for each of the television channels. In addition, Ho-wei Communications handles sales to system operators throughout Taiwan. Together these various units make up a complete package of television programming. Videoland ventured outside the area of channel operations with the Videoland Hunters of the local SBL basketball league in 2004. The team serves as a source of program materials for the Videoland Sports Channel and has been a key factor in promoting the development of sports and recreation in Taiwan.

DEVELOPMENT AND GROWTH OVER MORE THAN TWO DECADES

Videoland was founded in 1983 as a production house, producing more than 150 programs for the Government Information Office, the Public Television Service and commercial television stations. These included such popular programs as the prime-time series 'Seven-colored Bridge' and Public TV's "Uncle Sun's Stories" and others which won numerous awards from the GIO and the Ministry of the Interior.

Videoland Television Network As Taiwan's television market matured, Videoland expanded beyond its original program-planning, production and post-production operations. In 1989 the company began channel operations and agency sales for cable TV, and in 1996 the Videoland Television Network was established as a flagship for all channel and program operations. Videoland Network is now one of the top providers of program content in Taiwan, with a history of more than 25 years in Taiwan's television industry.

Videoland Television Network has grown steadily during its 25-plus years of operations to become a leading force in Taiwan's cable TV industry. Videoland stands out for its integrity and know-how in a highly-competitive media environment and boasts an enviable reputation among the island's viewers.

Taiwan's dynamic media environment calls for quick responses to meet the changing needs of audiences. Videoland has constantly adjusted its long-range strategy in the past by adding the Sports Channel and Japan Channel, and by offering Korean dramas just when audiences were looking for something new. This ability to anticipate and take advantage of opportunities is a key to the success of the services that Videoland provides to viewers.

In 1998 Videoland Sports presented the Amway Cup Women's Professional Billiards Tournament, opening up a whole new area for women athletes and for viewers in Taiwan. Similarly, in 2001 On-TV touched off a surge of Korean drama fever with hits like 'All about Eve' and 'Hotelier'. This trend was running strong in 2002 when the enormously-popular Korean historical drama 'The Last Empress' aired on Videoland Drama Channel. The show attracted record audiences while stirring up discussions in political and academic circles throughout Taiwan.

Videoland Sports Channel also set records when it broadcast the Asia Baseball Championships in 2003, confirming Videoland's diversified, specialized approach to development. In the same year Videoland set up agency operations to offer services to aspiring entertainers and performers, helping them to develop their skills while providing talent for Videoland's growing output of in-house produced programs. Talent agency operations mean new opportunities in the entertainment industry for Videoland, putting the company in position for further development in the future.

This was followed by the launch of Videoland Western Movie Channel in 2004, adding a new dimension of entertainment in the line-up of channels. In June of the same year the network ventured into professional sports with the purchase of the BCC Mars basketball team. Now known as the Videoland Hunters, the team represents the spirit and competitiveness of Videoland and has helped to re-vitalize the world of professional basketball in Taiwan.

Videoland also began producing children's programs in 2004, adding to the variety and depth of the content provided to Taiwan's television industry.

During the following year Videoland Western Movie Channel was re-named MaxTV and expanded its programming to incorporate a broad range of entertainment shows in addition to its Western movies and television series. Other popular features included reporting on leisure news and increased coverage of basketball games featuring SBL teams.

On January 1, 2006, a seventh channel was added to the Videoland family with the establishment of the Videoland Kids Channel. Known as QTV, the channel offers shows geared to meet the needs of young viewers for education and entertainment.

OUTLOOK FOR THE FUTURE

Videoland General Entertainment Channel (ON-TV)

  • Program content: Variety shows, informative talk shows, cartoons and other types of entertainment programming
  • Competitive advantage: On-TV offers a wide variety of family-oriented programs for clearly-defined audience segments. Segmentation even includes shows designed for audiences in northern, southern, eastern and western Taiwan, and the channel enjoys very high levels of viewer loyalty.

Since On-TV was established in 1998 the channel has continually worked to stay abreast of trends in the cable TV market. Changes and consolidations over the years have allowed On-TV to establish itself as a brand for diversified programming and write a unique history for itself in the market.

In 2005 the Golden Bell Awards recognized On-TV and the content of its programming. In the future On-TV will continue to inject more local feeling into its programs, with shows that enrich the lives of viewers and prove useful information. For example, the program Five Days of Ice and Fire described the heights and depths of the lifestyle of people in the entertainment industry in Taiwan. Incredible World explores the endless variety of wonders around us. Taiwan Ecology Blog takes serious interest in the animals of taiwan. These programs and others make Videoland the perfect source for unending entertainment.

On-TV is thus a full-blown entertainment channel with a wide range of program sources.

2004: On-TV adjusts its line-up of talk shows in line with current social trends. This included shows which broadened the scope of on-air discussions such as Hot Line With Two Beauties, talking about the latest political issues, and KTV Reporter, reporting on social trends. Videoland Kids Channel

  • (Channel No:79) Videoland Kids TV's first broadcast came in mid-January 2006, offering young viewers programming different from anything else they'll find in the children's TV market in Taiwan. Kids TV is designed to be an entertaining and educational companion for children, offering programs that other channels cannot match.
  • Primary Objective:

Introduce outstanding programs for children from content providers around the world.

Videoland Kids TV has joined hands with the BBC to offer selected programs from the celebrated BBC Kids Block line-up such as Teletubbies and Fimbles. In addition, the channel has acquired an outstanding series of children's shows from NHK Japan. Kids TV has developed a complete range of programs for pre-schoolers in a special time slot and will continue to add titles in the future with varied contents that will stimulate the creativity and imagination of young audiences.

Programs and Schedules

Kids TV begins with a clearly-defined schedule of cartoons for children, and the channel is scouring the world to find programs that are appropriate and attractive for viewers in the market. In addition, special programming schedules have been developed for broadcasts during holiday periods, so that children of all ages will be able to enjoy a rich line-up of entertaining cartoons.

Developing In-house Produced Programs for Children and Building a Library of Proprietary Content

Videoland Kids TV has asked many 'older brothers' and 'older sisters' to work with us in developing programs that are enjoyable and educational for young viewers. The result is a growing library of high-quality in-house produced content that we will use in putting together a full schedule for children.

Bringing a Varied Mix of Self-produced and Purchased Programs into the Market

Product research has shown that programming for young children should focus on self-produced shows that are educationally-oriented, with a secondary emphasis on cartoons and entertainment. The channel's cartoon image sales business stems from cartoon characters developed in our own in-house programs as well as characters from cartoons purchased from overseas. The rights for the latter are negotiated along with the cartoons so that the channel can develop business in foreign cartoon characters as well as characters from local shows.

Respresented Channels

  • (Channel No:19) Videoland has served as agent for the Discovery Channel in Taiwan since 1994, helping the channel to become the leading information and documentary channel in Taiwan with a current reach of more than five million households and 100% penetration. Medialand provided specialized corporate advertising, advertising photography and other functions for these channels. In 2005 the Advertising Division expanded the scope of its activities to include public-spirited events like shooting the People's Joint Action; the Golden Visual Awards in cooperation with the Government Information Office and the Show Your Love campaign for the Taipei City Government. All of these projects have been carried out by the Advertising Sales Department with support from the Planning and Traffic divisions to form a solid, three-cornered approach to advertising.

Videoland Hunters

  • Videoland Hunters are a team with a winning tradition of more than 20 years. The team dates back to 1983 when it was originally founded as the Chien-hong Men's Basketball Team. The team's motto of Freedom, Greatness and Mars (God of War) has carried it through two decades in which it has consistently been among the highest finishers in its league.

Videoland decided to try its hand at basketball, purchasing Chien-hong in June 2004 and re-naming it the Videoland Hunters a month later. The team was led by Jay Tseng, President of Videoland's Advertising Division, with day-to-day operations headed up by Liu Chih-wei, a Director in Videoland Sports. Chung Chih-mong, known as the iron and blood (tough) coach, was in charge of training for the team as the Head Coach.

The team took to the court as the Hunters for the first time in October 2004, finishing second among seven teams in the Oligo Million tournament with a 4-3 record. During 2005 the team made it into post-season play with a record of 18 V12, but after a strong start the team faltered and finished in third place with one win and two losses. Although the Hunters missed the championship game, they won the respect and admiration of players and fans throughout Taiwan. During the summer break in 2005 Chou Hai-rong took the reins as head coach of the team, with Chung Chih-mong serving as technical advisor. The coaching adjustment is another step toward the goal of coming out on top in the second season of full play for the re-vamped SBL league.
