It was founded at 1 August, 1914, at the national holiday of Switzerland. It was one of the earliest national parks in Europe.
In the park, it is not allowed to leave the road, make fire or sleep outside the Chamanna Cluozza, the mountain hut located in the parc. It is also forbidden to disturb the animals or the plants, or to take anything from the parc home.
A visitor centre is located in Zernez.
