The M-Net (Electronic Media Network) Literary Awards, a commercial television station based in South Africa, established the M-Net Award in 1991.

The original aim of the prize was to encourage the writing of quality novels, published by South African authors in one of South Africa's 11 official languages, which could also be adapted for the screen. Initially the award was open to adult and children's books, but the sponsors no longer consider children's titles.
