Well, uh...I'm new.

The little welcome template thingy says to say hi (and thank you, by the way, for welcoming me so kindly and promptly, I was very flattered)....anyway, hi. I'm Keakealani, you can call me Kea, or Keakea, or Keaks, if you want...I'm from Hawaii. More about me on my user page...otherwise, it's nice to be here. I always look for groups like this wherever I go, some place that's dedicated simply to being nice to other people, since that's my real skill (although I can get nasty when I'm mad, but I'll keep that offline, usually). Anyway, I'm rambling terribly, but...hello! —Keakealani talkcontribs 05:40, 20 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

It's very nice to meet you, Kea! We're glad to have you here at Esperanza, and it will be great to spread some niceness throughout Wikipedia with you. :) -- Natalya 05:56, 20 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Confused

Hi there, I have my name on the join up list for people who don't meet the requirements yet. Just wondering, do you need to have roughly 150 main edits or just 150 edits in total? Please help, I want to join soon! ps. I have 95 main edits and roughly 325 total edits. Thanks, Jam01 05:53, 22 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I'm pretty sure it's 150 total edits. If it is, then welcome to Esperanza :) --james(talk) 06:01, 22 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Well, depends. If you have 150 edits to your userpage or something like that, then chances are it really isn't that great. But I took a quick look at you contribs and they look fine. I see you've welcomed a lot of people, and that's a good sign for an Esperaznan. So I'd say you don't have anything to worry about :) Ungovernable ForceThe Wiki Kitchen! 06:17, 22 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Strive

I am starting a Strive campagin. The Strive banner is a minor award given to anyone that strives; for any reason. They may strive to:

  • Make right decisons
  • Contribute
  • Fight vandalisim
  • Be positive
  • Help
  • Create
  • Protect
  • Maintain
  • For Loyalty
  • For just any other reason were a Wikipedian Strives.

You don't just have to use it as an award. I put it on my userpage as a reminder to myself and others to Strive in everything they do.

Feel free to help.

Members list

I was just adding my name to members who wanted to join Esperanza and I was looking at the list of members, and I think the active/inactive/former/ lists need to updated. Any suggestions as to how to go about updating this? — The Future 23:00, 30 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Being rather un-technilogically minded, the only way I can think of is to go through it manually, since there isn't really one source that says if someone has left Wikipedia or been indef blocked or something. -- Natalya 15:48, 31 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Should we use a bot to do check the members? --Terence Ong (T | C) 15:50, 31 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
No bot like that exists that I know of except the Rick Block admin update script he runs to check status' of admins, but that would take a lot more time to figure out than to manually check it, I think.. — The Future 21:47, 31 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Request your thoughts requested regarding 3RR

User:71.34.113.170 raised a question regarding 3RR on Wikipedia:Village pump (policy).

Carcharoth responded "Actual discussion, including moving stuff to the talk page to discuss it, trumps 3RR and Being Bold everytime, IMO."

My take on this is that what Carcharoth wrote sounds good but isn't true.

Here's what I wrote:

I disagree with Carcharoth's assertion that 3RR does not apply if there is discussion. If you get to the third contentious edit on anything, you should stop and take a breather. Discussion doesn't mean "I reverted your edit and here's why". Discussion means "I think your edit should be reverted and here's why".
Yes, I know this is really hard to do when there's an egregiously bad piece of text in article mainspace. You have to use your judgment. If the text says "John Seigenthaler was suspected of..." then you have to take it out and rely on the "gross violation of policy" defense. If, on the other hand, it's just a POV rant, then it's probably better to let it stand after your second attempt and let another editor step in. If this doesn't prevent an edit war, then issue an RFC and go through the dispute resolution process. Consider this (proposed) guideline: Other than slander, libel, copyright violations and incivility in the article itself, the biggest sin on Wikipedia is edit-warring. Avoid it at all costs. --Richard 19:36, 1 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Some context for what I wrote... Some of you may remember that a few weeks ago, I wrote a message saying that I needed help because I was in the midst of a budding edit war with an anonymous editor who was putting in poorly written POV text. I had reached the 3RR limit and wanted to find a way to maintain Wikipedia quality without getting into an edit war and violating 3RR.

I came here and the response I got was two-fold: (1) Esperanza doesn't take sides in disuptes and (2) take a breather. Both of these comments, while frustrating at the time, turned out to be pretty good advice.

I found a sort of compromise with the anon that made him happier than it made me and the next morning another editor reverted the whole thing. The anon never came back so peace reigns in that corner of the Wikipedia universe.

Anyway, I have come to conclude that except for a few really egregious violations, the cardinal sin on Wikipedia is edit-warring.

Your thoughts and feedback are solicited.

Would Esperanza be useful in helping me find Wikipedians to collaborate with on articles?

A couple of weeks ago, after a conflict with an anonymous user, I declared my Wikilife to be in a state of crisis. Natalya left an encouraging note on my talk page. One of my problems was that I was facing difficulty finding Wikipedians to collaborate on articles. She suggested I join Esperanza as they could help me find Wikipedians to collaborate with.

My goal on Wikipedia is to contribute information to articles on my interests, and to make Wikifriends who share my interests. Therefore, I envisioned a system of collaboration. For example, let's say I wanted to make RuneScape a good article. I find three or four other editors who play RuneScape and wish to collaborate with me. We then work on the article: adding content and images, identifying and fixing problems, and ensuring the article meets Good Article criteria. Eventually we will send the article for peer review and nominate it for Good Article. While we discuss on the talk page about how to improve the article, we are likely to get to know each other and become Wikifriends.

Unfortunately, I have not been successful in finding Wikipedians to collaborate with. This, coupled with several other issues, including anonymous vandals and a dispute over the Homerun redirect, has caused me stress. Natalya has touted Esperanza as a way to find Wikipedians to collaborate with. Therefore, I wish to ask whether Esperanza would really be helpful in helping me find Wikipedians to collaborate with. Currently, Esperanza seems like a community of Wikipedians who send well-wishes to those who are stressed.

My interests include computers/websites and Singapore TV shows/movies. I have a to-do list on my userpage which you should consider checking out. If you are interested in collaborating with me on any of the articles listed there, please drop a note on my talk page.

--J.L.W.S. The Special One 12:21, 2 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Have you checked out the various WikiProjects? They're a good way of collaborating with others, though some projects are more active than others. Good luck. --Fang Aili talk 17:38, 2 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I joined the WikiProject Computer and video games to cover the Neopets, RuneScape, AdventureQuest and Chip's Challenge articles. What I need is a WikiProject for Singapore TV shows/movies. I discussed on the Wikipedia:SGpedians' notice board about plans to create a WikiProject Singapore, but the proposal fell through. Would Esperanza be useful here? --J.L.W.S. The Special One 04:49, 3 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Maybe there's people at WikiProject Television (or Film) who focus on Singapore. But if you want to start a wikiproject, I recommend just doing it. (I did that with WikiProject Figure Skating - there's no acceptance process; you just do it.) There seems to be a significant community of Singaporeans on en.wp, and I'd bet that if you started a wikiproject you'd get quite a few members, even if support seemed lackluster at Wikipedia:SGpedians' notice board. In fact I'm quite surpised one doesn't exist already. --Fang Aili talk 13:44, 3 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Hmm.. well, Wikipedia:SGpedians' notice board looks to be the equivalent of WikiProject Singapore (and Wikipedia:WikiProject Singapore even redirects there). Is there some reason you can't collaborate with those folks? --Fang Aili talk 13:47, 3 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I echo Fang Aili's suggestions about just starting the Wikiproject. People are often reluctant to start something on their own, or help to organize it, but once something has been established, they could be a lot more likely to join it and help out. -- Natalya 00:37, 7 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I think Wikipedia:Facebook is a great initative; it adds alot to the spirit of the community to actually see who it is you are talking to and working with. deleted Image:Friendship_is_a.jpg which seems to criticise EA as a dead end friendship

I have deleted from the main Esperanza page the image Image:Friendship_is_a.jpg (available from Wikimedia Commons) which in my interpretation seemed to criticise Esperanza as a dead end friendship. If anyone disagrees with this, please discuss the appropriateness of the image. Thank you. --Tachikoma 02:06, 6 September 2006

After thinking about it, I suppose that User:Gmaxwell may have intended to suggest that friendship in of itself is the end or destination. I hope he will understand that the image that he had inserted is open to interpretation and may not say to all users what he meant. I also hope he will understand if I suggest that the image not be reinserted on the page, precisely due to this risk of misinterpretation. Please don't feel offended, it's nothing personal. This message has been copied onto the user's talk page as well. Sorry for the trouble. --Tachikoma 02:21, 6 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Just had to share this with someone...

I know this isn't exactly related to the mission of Esperanza but I just had to share this with someone.

So... I was using the Lupin filter of recent changes to do some RC Patrulling. Up comes this article Poutine which matches the keyword "poo" (used in providing the pronuncination of this French word). I figure "OK, that's a reasonable use of the syllable but, hey, what's this article about? Is it a hoax? I mean food that looks like poo and has a name that sounds like poo? Come on. This can't be for real." So, I read the article and was pretty suspicious until I saw the CBC link. Ya know, this might actually be legit. Anytime somebody makes fun of our American low-brow culture, I'm gonna reference this bit of Canajun culture.

P.S. If this does turn out to be a hoax, I'm gonna be SOOOO embarassed.

--Richard 06:58, 7 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Haha. There is such a thing as poutine, it doesn't taste very good, and it is pronounced as "poo", I guess just because the French (Canadians) are silly :P ~ Booya Bazooka 07:35, 7 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]
