The skunk is a black mammal with a white stripe down its back as well as white facial markings. Contrary to original belief, the skunk is not a member of the weasel family, but is a member of its own unique family. In some parts of the rural southeast United States, the skunk is known as the polecat. When alarmed, the skunk often will spray a particularly offensive chemical from its posterior that can be smelled for many miles (or kilometers).
