A Paranormal Investigation Group is a term used to refer to a group of researchers who investigate allegedly paranormal phenomenon, especially homes or buildings that are purported to be haunted. The purpose of these groups varies from research for their own purposes or that of the larger field, assiting people who believe they are experiencing paranormal activity and offering advice, and debunking pranks, hoax attempts, and misapprehensions (such as creaking doors, banging pipes, etc) as normal phenomenon. Other groups use the format and semblance of a 'paranormal group' to work with other parties such as tourist sites and ghostwriters to generate interest in a location or story by falsifying evidence, exaggerating claims, and other forms of profiteering.

These groups vary in technique, some employing only 'trance mediums' and other psychic individuals while others base their conclusions solely on their equipment, using devices such as EMF detectors, cameras, audio recorders, thermometers to confirm or debunk claims of hauntings. Many are a mix of these two outlooks.
