The phrase "opposite sex" refers to the gender which a heterosexual is sexually attracted to; that is, the gender appropriate for sexual reproduction to occur.

Some researchers working in gender theory question the biological notion of "sex" and suggest that there are more than two sexes and a plurality of genders. They reject the widely held notion that all humans embody one of two, polar sexes. Others disagree. [citation needed]
