New Zealand has over 2,000 primary and secondary schools.

More than half get most of their funding support from central government. Many others are "integrated", which gives them some state funding. A few are completely independent.

Population decline in rural and some urban areas has led to school closures in recent decades. This was a much debated topic in 2003–2004.
