The Niels Bohr Institute is part of the Niels Bohr Institute for Astronomy, Physics and Geophysics at the University of Copenhagen. The four main departments are: the Astronomical Observatory, the Department of Geophysics, the Niels Bohr Institute and the Ørsted Laboratory. Most experimental work takes place at CERN, Brookhaven, and DESY. Main areas of research are:

  • Theoretical Particle Physics and Field Theory
  • Experimental Particle Physics
  • Theoretical Nuclear Physics
  • Experimental Nuclear Physics
  • Physics of Nonlinear, Complex and Biological Systems

The institute was founded in 1921, Niels Bohr had been on the faculty at Copenhagen since 1914. On Niels Bohr's 80 birthday - October 7, 1965 - the Institute for Theoretical Physics of the University of Copenhagen officially became The Niels Bohr Institute.
