The Angara rocket is designed to remove Russia's dependency on Kazakhstan (from whom they lease the Baikonur Cosmodrome) for heavy lift, as well as eliminate purchasing the Zenit from the Ukraine. The Angara will allow Russia place objects in orbit while still maintaining the ability to launch payloads equivalent to the Proton rocket, the heavy lift workhorse for both the Soviet Union and then Russia.

The Angara family of rockets is designed to be modular, similar to the US EELV. It features multiple configurations with payloads to LEO ranging from 2,000 to 23,000 kilograms.

These rockets will most likely be launched at Plesetsk Cosmodrome, a wholly Russian launch facility.
