Norwich is the county town of the County of Norfolk, England.

History

A good history of Norwich can be found here. It describes how the the Icene & Romans, the Anglo-Saxons, the Vikings, the Late Saxons and the Normans shaped the city and the county.

Pictures of Norwich can be found here.

The name of Norwich appears on coins minted during the reign of King Athelstan (early 10th century AD). At the time of the Norman Conquest the city was one of the largest in England, and it continued to be a major centre for trade, especially wool. The River Wensum was a convenient exporting route to the sea.

There was a riot in 1272 when the citizens fought with the cathedral monks over the imposition of a toll on the annual fair.

Norwich has a Norman castle and Norman Cathedral, both around 900 years old and in very good condition. The castle was converted to a prison and then to a museum.

Norwich has a football (soccer) team nicknamed "The Canaries". The team has a website which can be accessed here.
