Norrbotten Regiment, or Norrbottens regemente, also I 19, is a Swedish Army infantry regiment that traces its origins back to the 19th Century. It is still in active service.

History

The regiment was created when the Westrobothnia Regiment was split in 1841, into two corps units, one of them being Norrbotten Field Ranger Corps. The unit was renamed to Norrbotten Regiment in 1892. A skiing batallion was created in 1910, and later, in 1943 split off from the regiment. The battalion was reorganized in the 1970s into Laponia Ranger Regiment.

The regiment was given the designation I 19 (19th Infantry Regiment). It was merged with Norrbotten Armoured Battalion (P 5) in 1975, and gained the designation I 19/P 5. For a short time in the 1990s, the unit was merged with the wartime organized Norrbotten Brigade. In 2000, the unit was reorganized once again, and was redesignated back to its old designation I 19, the name was also changed back to Norrbottens regemente.
